The movie stars Oscar Isaac in a story suspiciously similar to the one of Bob Dylan.

Despite many fans’ hopes, Timothée Chalamet wasn’t the one to take home the Oscar for Best Actor after all, though his role in James Mangold’s biopic A Complete Unknown might feature the actor’s most powerful performance so far.

However, to some, Chalamet’s representation of Bob Dylan on the screen is likely to serve as a reminder that years ago Oscar Isaac starred in a pretty similar-themed movie, probably inspired by Dylan’s story as well.

Directed by the Coen Brothers, the film, just like its successor this year, received several nods from the Academy back in the day.

Inside Llewyn Davis Is Your Next Perfect Watch After A Complete Unknown

Released back in 2013, a period black comedy drama Inside Llewyn Davis follows Isaac’s Llewyn Davis, a fictional musician looking for a career breakthrough.

The movie sets up a story surprisingly similar to the one in A Complete Unknown, watching Davis arrive in New York City in 1961 with nothing else but his guitar and great ambitions.

Trying to pave his way to success and recognition through some help from friends and strangers, Davis pushes his dream forward; he’s eventually brought to a Chicago club where a music mogul might be generous enough to get him even closer to what he’s desperately searching for.

Years Later, Inside Llewyn Davis Is a Critical Darling and a Box Office Success

Having brought Oscar Isaac his breakthrough role, Inside Llewyn Davis became a massive hit upon its release in theatres back in the day. With a budget of $11 million, the movie grossed $33 million, also earning critics’ and audiences’ recognition with scores of 92% and 74% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.

It was unfairly snubbed by the Academy though, securing only 2 nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Sound Mixing and ultimately losing both statuettes.

However, Inside Llewyn Davis might still find a new life after A Complete Unknown’s success. Just like this year’s Oscar nominee, the former is yet another perfect depiction of the 1960’s New York City and all the struggles a young and yet unknown musician has to face on their way to worldwide recognition.
