James Gunn is building a new universe brick by brick, cape by cape — and if he gets his way, he’s bringing a familiar face along for the ride. But not just any face. We’re talking Zoe Saldana: Marvel royalty, sci-fi icon, and one of Gunn’s all-time favourites.
The director — now the architect of DC Studios — has made no secret of his admiration for Saldaña, and in a recent interview with ScreenRant, she finally addressed the whispers head-on.
"No, but I can’t wait for Superman," she said, asked whether she and Gunn had discussed a specific role. "I think we’re all sort of anticipating. He’s so talented, and I’m pretty sure that he’s going to bring a lot of heart, but also a lot of humour and levity to this beautiful legacy of a story."
It’s a classic Saldaña answer: warm, diplomatic, full of grace — but also not denying a thing.
And that’s the kicker — this isn’t the first time Gunn has teased her involvement. Back in 2024, he hinted on Threads that he had a specific DC character in mind for Saldana, sparking plenty of fan speculation.
While Gunn’s new DC Universe mainly features fresh faces like David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, exceptions like Nicholas Hoult — and now possibly Saldaña — show he’s carefully picking trusted talent.
Whether she’ll become a cosmic heroine, a powerful villain, or something entirely new remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: if Zoe Saldana joins the DCU, it won’t just be another role — it’ll be a major statement.
