It’s terrifying to even imagine that some of these cold-blooded movie professionals might have real-life prototypes.

10. John and Jane Smith from Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)

We don’t typically consider married couples to be menacing, but there’s an exception to every rule — and John and Jane Smith are definitely one. From trying to kill each other at their house to dispatching countless assassins sent after them while working together, the Smiths are a force to be reckoned with — or, better, not even touched.

9. Chris Wolff from The Accountant (2016)

They often say that the most dangerous people are the ones who patiently try to avoid the fight, and Chris Wolff is the ultimate proof of that. He’s not excited about killing people, but when dookie hits the fan, he does what has to be done to succeed. The scariest part about Wolff is that he’s always over-prepared for any scenario.

8. Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction (1994)

Following up on “the most dangerous people are,” we have Jules Winnfield. Despite being a terrifying (and most realistic) hitman in his own right, Jules continuously tries to avoid killing people for the vast majority of the movie… Because as soon as someone actually jumps him, Jules proves himself a merciless apex predator.

7. Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men (2007)

Some assassins love their job; others pretend to serve a greater purpose; but there’s another group entirely. Anton Chigurh was born an assassin, and he’s more than your ordinary hitman — he’s an unstoppable force of nature destroying everyone in his path. He dispatches everyone between him and the money with captivating ease.

6. Léon from Léon: The Professional (1994)

Even those seemingly beyond salvation can find a greater cause to fight for. Léon was a mafia hitman for his entire life, but when he sees a little girl in danger, he does anything to save and protect her. Léon’s style is minimalistic: he wastes neither words nor bullets and makes sure to punish his enemies even from the grave.

5. The Bride from Kill Bill (2003)

Also known as Black Mamba, the Bride doesn’t officially have a name — but she earned it nonetheless. One of the coolest-looking assassins on our list, the Bride uses a combination of blades and firearms to take out her enemies, and what makes her even more badass is her motivation: that woman is out for a hardcore revenge.

4. Agent 47 from Hitman (2007)

While the movie version of Agent 47 is arguably but a shadow of his video game alter ego, this assassin still remains one of the most terrifying professionals. His greatest strength? He knows all about masquerading as other people and is the ultimate master of disguise. You never know which of the waiters is him.

3. Jason Bourne from The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

Since Jackie Chan’s days, everyone knows that a real professional doesn’t need actual weapons: they can use anything around them to dispatch their enemies. Jason Bourne is a master of that, but on top of his ability to turn an empty magazine into a blunt weapon, he’s also an exceptionally quick and creative thinker.

2. Deadpool from Deadpool (2016)

Wade Wilson is a merc — or, rather, the Merc with a Mouth. He was exceptionally good at his job even before the mutation, but after gaining super-regeneration, he became genuinely unkillable in both literal and metaphorical ways. Thankfully, Deadpool is generally good-natured and only hunts down those who hurt his people.

1. John Wick from John Wick (2014)

The ultimate assassin, John Wick is a menace. See him as good guy all you want, but John is bloodthirsty and uncompromising, tearing his way through waves of enemies at a time with the dedication of a furious dog owner. John Wick takes no prisoners and BS from anyone, so if you piss the guy off… Well, sorry, but no one can save you.
