$150M Later, ‘Weapons’ Is the Horror Everyone’s Talking About (Including Stephen King)

Zach Kregger’s hit movie might have just got closer to becoming the biggest genre achievement of this year.
Critics and audiences are often left divided over a movie, but when Stephen King speaks both parties usually listen.
Having helmed several adaptations of his own books alongside the world’s most renowned directors, King isn’t a stranger to the world of horror in cinema and knows exactly what a movie of the genre should look like.
The author has recently praised Dave Franco and Alison Bree’s Together and now offered his fans another reason to go and watch Zach Cregger’s Weapons in cinemas, suggesting that the movie did live up to all of his expectations.
Stephen King Calls ‘Weapons’ “Very Scary” In His Short Review
- On Rotten Tomatoes, Weapons holds scores of 94% and 86% from critics and audiences
- On IMDb, the movie is rated 7.9/10
As if this was some sort of a tradition for the writer, King doesn’t need many words to describe how he feels about this or that horror flick.
As a result, he recently took to his social media, posting a short, but highly positive review on Weapons.
“WEAPONS: Confidently told, and very scary. I loved it”, King wrote on X several days ago.
Released worldwide on August 8, the movie went on to gross around $150 million against its budget of $38 million, becoming one of the most profitable original horror movies since the spring release of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
‘Weapons’ Sequel Is Coming, but Not Anytime Soon
Even though Weapons has now turned into Cregger’s pride and joy both financially and critically, the director might take his time before going further with the same story.
As Cregger teased in an interview with Variety upon the movie’s release a couple of weeks ago, he has already come up with something (which is not necessarily a sequel) that unfolds in Weapons’ universe, though the story still needs more time to be developed.
“I can’t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I’m kind of excited about. I’m not going to do it next, and I probably won’t do it after my next movie, but I do have one and I’d like to see it on the screen one day”, Cregger revealed, referring to his upcoming movie based on the “Resident Evil” video game.
Weapons is now playing in theatres worldwide.
