1923 season 3 cancelled, 1944 renewed: Taylor Sheridan ended 1923 by design, and 1944 just got its first update in three years
Stop googling "1923 season 3 release date." I say this with love: it does not exist, it never will, and the thing you actually want has been hiding behind a different four-digit number this whole time.
Yes, technically, the answer is brutal: there is no season 3 of 1923. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren have hung up their Dutton hats.
But "cancelled" is doing a lot of dishonest work in that sentence, because nothing here was cancelled. This was an execution planned years in advance, by the one man in television who is allowed to do that.
Sheridan always said it was two blocks
Taylor Sheridan structured 1923 as a closed two-season story — one story, snapped in half — and said so out loud, back in 2023, while everyone was busy theorizing.
"It's really the second half of the season... I need to do this in two blocks. An eight episode block and a second eight episode block to wrap this up."
Brandon Sklenar — Spencer Dutton himself — put it even more plainly: "It's bookend. It's still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there's just a split in the middle, but it's all one piece. It will conclude." And conclude it did, with Spencer's saga closed out in the season 2 finale. Grieve accordingly, but don't file a missing persons report.
Meanwhile, 1944 finally blinked
Now for the fun part. 1944, the next Dutton chapter, was announced in May 2023 — and then went so quiet that fans started treating it like a cryptid. Three years of nothing: no cast, no cameras, no crumbs.
That silence just broke. On a recent earnings call, Paramount confirmed a premiere window — the show is slated to arrive in 2026, its first real status update since the day it was ordered.
Three years between "it's happening" and "here's when" is glacial even by Sheridan standards — the man wrote entire other franchises in that window.
What we're walking into, based on where 1923 left the family:
- A World War II–era Montana, with the ranch squeezed by history yet again;
- The obvious candidates to carry it: a grown version of Spencer's line and Jack's branch of the family tree;
- No confirmed cast yet — which, given Sheridan's habit of announcing an Oscar winner on a random Tuesday, is its own kind of cliffhanger.
So no, you're not getting 1923 season 3. You're getting the next war instead. The Duttons wouldn't have it any other way.
