5 Best Steven Soderbergh Movies to Watch After Black Bag

The director’s new movie starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender has become a major record breaker days after its theatrical release.
With a career span of more than 30 years, Steven Soderbergh has had many occasions to prove his status as one of the most acclaimed directors of modern times, but nothing has gone as far as his most recent movie.
Released worldwide on March 14, Black Bag kicked off with a nearly perfect critical score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, also garnering accolades from the audiences.
The movie came as a record-breaking matter for most of the cast and crew members, including for Soderbergh, Blanchett and Fassbender, for whom Black Bag is currently the highest-rated film in the entire career.
However, Soderbergh’s filmography has plenty of other options to dive into, especially if you have already seen Black Bag and just can’t forget about it.
Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)
Soderbergh’s debut feature, Sex, Lies, and Videotape has long remained the director’s most acclaimed work until Black Bag came along.
The movie stars Andie MacDowell as Ann whose relationships with her husband and successful lawyer John have run its course for both, as it’s also revealed that the latter sneaks out to sleep with his wife’s sister Cynthia.
Things become even more complicated when John’s old friend Graham comes to visit and videotapes Ann and Cynthia opening up about their hidden sexual desires to each other.
Behind the Candelabra (2013)
A biographical drama with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in the leading roles, Behind the Candelabra is based on the 1988 book of the same name and follows pianist Liberace’s last ten years of life as he navigates through his complicated relationships with a much younger lover and career ups and downs.
The movie was highly praised for Douglas and Damon’s performances and won several major awards, including 3 Primetime Emmys and 2 Golden Globes.
Out of Sight (1998)
Based on Elmore Leonard’s 1996 novel of the same name, the movie marked the first of many collaborations between Soderbergh and George Clooney who here stars in the leading role opposite Jennifer Lopez.
Out of Sight follows Clooney’s Jack Foley, the most successful bank robber of the country, getting out of jail just to fall for Federal Marshall Karen Sisco once and for all.
With both determined to explore whether their relationship is worth the shot, Jack and Karen will likely go against the law and risk it all to test their love.
Traffic (2000)
Adapted from a 1989 British TV series, Soderbergh’s Traffic went through complete production hell before eventually being greenlit.
Starring Benicio del Toro, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones among others, the movie offers several different perspectives of illegal drug use, dividing the main story between drug users, enforcers, politicians and traffickers.
Traffic had a major box office success and eventually turned into one of the frontrunners during the 2001 awards season, winning 4 Oscars out of 5 nominations.
Logan Lucky (2017)
With a star-studded cast comprising Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Katie Holmes, Sebastian Stan, Hilary Swank and Daniel Craig, Logan Lucky offers a compelling action-packed heist story, following West Virginia family man Jimmy Logan who tries to steal money from the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.
