Sometimes there is no need to write a fictional crime story, when all you need to do is take a look at some incredibly chilling real-life events.

Many people have heard of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story Netflix TV series, which, despite mixed reviews, made quite a splash when it was released in September 2022 for a variety of reasons.

However, there are other true crime TV shows that didn't get nearly as much attention as Dahmer, despite being absolutely great, so let's take a look at five of them.

Des (2020)

Starring David Tennant, this British miniseries revolves around the arrest of Scottish serial killer Dennis Nilsen after the remains of one of his victims clog a drain near his home.

Tennant, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the real-life Nilsen, is absolutely terrifying in the role, making this series both mesmerizing and difficult to watch.

The Staircase (2022)

This TV show is absolutely bizarre, as it is based on a 2004 documentary of the same name, which covered the trial of Michael Peterson, portrayed by Colin Firth, who, what are the odds, was a crime writer himself.

After his wife is found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their home, an investigation begins that remains without a definitive answer to this day.

Black Bird ( 2022)

Based on an autobiographical novel by Jimmy Keene, portrayed by Taron Egerton, it follows his run-ins with the law and a plea deal that doesn't go exactly as planned.

The series also features Ray Liotta as Jimmy's father in one of the last performances of the actor's life.

The Nurse (2023)

This Danish TV series is based on the story of Christina Aistrup Hansen, who was arrested in 2015 for intentionally killing several patients.

However, she is not the main character; instead, the story focuses on her colleague, Pernille Kurzmann Larsen, who begins to suspect that her new friend may be hiding some dark secrets.

The Serpent (2021)

Set in 1970s Bangkok, the story is based on the crimes of Charles Sobhraj, also known as The Serpent, who killed unsuspecting tourists and even managed to create something of a cult around himself due to his infernal charisma.
