Zombies in a variety of interpretations – fast, slow, smart, mindless – but always terrifying.

A dull look, rotting flesh, mumbling instead of speech. Zombies have become as much a part of modern pop culture as detectives or police officers. Since George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, reanimated corpses have been considered a relevant social metaphor, but this is far from the only possible interpretation.

Especially for those who liked the new Prime Video hit Newtopia, we have chosen five series with the most terrifying zombies.

1. Kingdom, 2019-2020

Kingdom takes place in medieval Korea, which has been overrun by an epidemic of bloodthirsty undead. A young prince tries to gain an audience with the king, but soon discovers that his father has become a monster.

The struggle for power becomes as much a part of the plot as battling hordes of zombies. Kingdom boasts spectacular battle scenes, creepy zombies, luxurious scenery and impressive cinematography.

2. Dead Set, 2008

The British Dead Set tells the story of how the living dead filled the streets of London, including the set of the reality show Big Brother.

The participants take up firearms, fire extinguishers and other improvised means to kill both the living and the dead. It was Charlie Brooker, the future author of Black Mirror, who came up with the idea of crossing a reality format plot with violent and bloody horror.

3. Happiness, 2021

The COVID-19 virus has been raging for several years, but now it has mutated. Those infected with the disease experience bouts of madness, then they begin to thirst for blood, and then turn into zombies.

Yoon Sae-bom, an employee of the anti-terrorism department, suddenly learns that she is immune to the new virus. After entering into a fictitious marriage, she gets an apartment in a new housing complex, where she becomes a hostage along with the other residents.

Now the people must not only learn how to find a common language in a confined space, but also how to avoid being killed by bloodthirsty zombies and, most importantly, how to avoid going insane.

4. Dark Hole, 2021

Lee Hwa-sun is an experienced detective who is obsessed with finding the murderer of her husband. After she found his trail, she goes to the city of Muji. When she arrives, Hwa-sun realizes that strange things are happening there.

A strange black hole has appeared in the city, whose acrid smoke is poisoning the locals and turning them into crazy zombies. Lee meets former policeman Yoo Tae-han and together they want to save the remaining survivors and destroy the dark hole.

This drama is good in every way – an impressive mix of genres, excellent acting and unpredictable plot twists. And rest assured, it will not be easy to predict the ending of this story.

5. Black Summer, 2019-2021

After the zombie apocalypse begins, Rose joins the group of survivors and tries to find her lost daughter among the hordes of the walking dead. The first season of Black Summer fully justifies the show's name and leaves no trace of snow.

But in the second season, the action takes place in winter – immediately after the premiere, critics praised the writers for the unusual setting.

With rare exceptions, zombie movies and TV series show the characters surviving in summer. But Karl Schaefer and John Hyams' project, breaking all clichés, throws the characters out into the cold – where the cold kills people more often than the walking dead.
