The Gilded Age has become a hit among fans of historical drama, which is not surprising – it is not only a visually impressive show, but also a well-thought-out story that builds a portrait of the cultural center of the time.
Recently, the third season of The Gilded Age finally got a release date – it will debut on Max on June 22. If you don't know what to do for the next month and a half, here are five shows to help you pass the time.
1. Wolf Hall, 2015-2025
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%
Wolf Hall is an adaptation of Hilary Mantel's book series about Henry VIII's advisor Thomas Cromwell. The first season was released in 2015 – at the time, the author had published two novels, each of which won the Booker Prize and became global bestsellers.
The show received rave reviews, but the creators could not release a new season because Mantel was working on the final, third book. The novel was published in 2020, and we finally got a Season 2 last year.
Thanks to the brilliant source material and outstanding casting, Wolf Hall turned out to be a high-quality epic story about the most important era in the formation of England.
2. My Lady Jane, 2024
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%
The plot revolves around Jane Grey, who was the uncrowned queen of England for only nine days. As a result of a military rebellion led by Mary Tudor, the young lady lost her crown and then her head. The authors of the series ask themselves – what if everything had been different?
My Lady Jane is a fantasy about what kind of rebel Miss Grey was and how her life might have turned out if Mary's plans to destroy her relative had failed.
In addition, the creators of the project decided to break the rules to the fullest: in the world of My Lady Jane, some of the people have the ability to turn into animals.
3. Alias Grace, 2017
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%
With Season 6 of The Handmaid's Tale in full swing, it's worth remembering another notable adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel – the Netflix miniseries Alias Grace.
Grace is accused of muder, and over the course of several days, she tells the doctor her story from the beginning – how she barely survived the journey from Ireland to Canada, lost her mother, and went to work to support her brothers and sisters.
Her memories are confusing, illogical, and often contradictory, but they gradually lead the viewer and the doctor listening to her to believe that the woman may be innocent.
4. The Narrow Road to the Deep North, 2025
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100%
The Narrow Road to the Deep North is an adaptation of the Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan.
The story centers on an Australian military surgeon who is captured by the Japanese Army in the middle of World War II and forced to work on the construction of a railroad nicknamed the Death Railway due to the horrific working conditions.
Jacob Elordi brilliantly mastered his most difficult role so far – the emotional core of the story about the horrors of war, the fragility of human nature and the mechanisms of survival.
5. A Thousand Blows, 2024-...
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%
A Thousand Blows is dedicated to the criminal world of Victorian London: one of the storylines will tell about the real female shoplifting gang Forty Elephants, the second – about the rise in popularity of boxing.
A duo of Jamaican migrants arrive in the capital: in order to somehow make ends meet, they begin to engage in fistfights and meet the female criminals.
The main character of A Thousand Blows is played by Stephen Graham – a charismatic actor who starred in the recent Netflix hit Adolescence.
