Kristen Bell built a two-decade brand on radical honesty about her marriage. On this press tour, the honesty started working against her.

The setting was Dax Shepard's own Armchair Expert podcast, where Bell appeared with her Nobody Wants This co-stars Adam Brody, Justine Lupe, and Timothy Simons — the show's third season hit Netflix on October 22. Bell described how Shepard compliments waitresses' eyelashes or her friends' eyebrows at dinner, and what she takes from it: "That's flirting with me because he just made someone else feel good."

She elaborated with an example — Shepard once complimented her friend Heather's eyebrows, noticing something others never mentioned — and summed up the effect: "That's why it makes me fluttery inside." She added that he's never made a compliment that crossed a line, and Shepard joked that he steers clear of features that could sound suggestive.

The brand this was supposed to feed

For nearly two decades this kind of disclosure was the Bell-Shepard product. Together since 2007 and married since 2013, they turned couples therapy, his sobriety, and we-fight-constantly candor into Hollywood's most bankable honest marriage — an image sturdy enough to co-found a diaper company on and to anchor the podcast empire where this week's episode aired.

The returns have changed. This time the candor produced headlines with the word "trolled" in them and an r/Fauxmoi thread where the top reactions skipped sympathy entirely:

"Girl, leave him or leave us out of it."

The co-star who declined the premise

The sharper moment came secondhand, from the same press tour. One commenter described the cast's appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, where Barrymore asked the panel for relationship advice:

"Kristen said something to the affect of relationships are hard work. Adam said actually when you're with a great person it isn't that hard."

— a commenter on r/Fauxmoi, recounting the exchange

The trades haven't written that exchange up, so it stands as a viewer's account. It traveled anyway, because the casting is too clean: Brody's own marriage to Leighton Meester is the one the internet holds up as the "nonproblematic" Hollywood couple, and here he was on Bell's co-star panel, mildly declining the doctrine she's sold for twenty years.

Bell explained the flirting on her husband's own podcast. The headlines about it use the word "trolled."

"Marriage is hard work" was relatable as long as the work sounded mutual; "my husband complimenting other women is a gift to me" is the version where the audience starts doing the math on whose work it is. The parasocial deal Bell and Shepard built — we overshare, you root for us — depends on the oversharing sounding like honesty rather than coping, and this week a daytime-TV panel, a podcast clip, and one gossip-forum verdict all priced it as the latter. The next cute-anecdote news cycle gets read as evidence, not charm.
