After 28 Years, This Space Opera Is Still the Most Insane Sci-Fi Show Ever Made

It's an extremely crazy, surreal series filled with dark humor.
In 1997, Lexx – a science fiction series created by Canadian and German filmmakers with the financial participation of Britain's Channel 5 – hit the screens. It turned out to be completely different from dozens of similar space series about some starship and its brave crew.
What makes Lexx so unique? First of all, its characters. Usually in such projects the crew of a spaceship is a selection of heroes, brave men, geniuses, mysterious possessors of superpowers or noble aliens.
Lexx Shatters All the Stereotypes of Sci-Fi TV Shows About Space
Lexx breaks all the stereotypes. Its team is a bunch of losers and unstable personalities, each of them with their own peculiarity. They came together by chance and use a powerful weapon, Lexx, not to fight for peace around the world, but just to find a new home.
The main characters are absolutely incompatible. But this fact opens up a vast field of adventure for them.
There are unusual plot twists, role changes and transformations. Add to this the well-chosen actors, each of whom completely merges with his character and plays as brilliant as if they had been promised an Oscar, and you will understand why Lexx still has so many fans.
Lexx Is the Most Unusual Spaceship in the History of the Genre
Without a doubt, the most unusual character in the series is Lexx itself, a giant spaceship made of metal and living flesh, resembling a dragonfly without wings. To replenish its energy reserves, it can literally devour any useful substance, including the remains of the planets he blows up.
As a living being, Lexx provides its crew with everything they need: its internal organs produce air, water and food. Movement around and outside of Lexx takes place on miniature insect ships that most closely resemble flies or moths.
Lexx Is a Cheap, Weird, Eccentric, But Outstanding Sci-Fi Series
If you look at Lexx from the perspective of big-budget projects, the spectacle is frankly pathetic. The sets are made of rags, leather, and painted cardboard.
There are a lot of special effects, but even at the time of the series' release, they looked cheap. The series does not care about the laws of physics, and is full of logical inconsistencies, but...
But it is a masterpiece. What makes it so is the crazy script, the eccentric characters and their relationships, as well as the special style and atmosphere that creators Paul Donovan and Lex Gigeroff came up with.
