Ahsoka Makes It Crystal Clear Why So Many Star Wars Fans Root For The Empire
It is hard for fans to root for the "good guys" when they are repeatedly portrayed as careless buffoons.
The third episode of the Ahsoka TV series has just been released, and while it didn't bring as many new things to the Star Wars universe as the first two, it was still quite entertaining.
Apart from developing the plot and showing Jacen Syndulla, the son of Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus, for the first time in live action, it also brought up a rather significant problem with Star Wars that makes a lot of fans root for the bad guys.
When Hera tries to convince Chancellor Mon Mothma and a group of senators that Grand Admiral Thrawn is still alive and a threat to the New Republic, she is met with astonishing arrogance.
They completely dismiss Hera's warning and choose to ignore the looming threat despite having no concrete evidence that Thrawn is actually dead, frustrating both the character and the fans.
This is not the only time Star Wars has shown the New Republic government to be a bunch of incompetent clowns, as we saw the same careless behavior in episode 3 of The Mandalorian season 3.
New Republic Law Enforcement left Elia Kane, an undercover Imperial operative, alone with Dr. Penn Pershing, even though they were well aware of her Imperial past and knew that the device used on Pershing could be set to a life-threatening mode.
This led to Kane successfully frying the doctor's brains and escaping the scene completely unscathed.
Considering how much more seriously the Empire took their problem with the Rebel Alliance (well, for the most part), just look at the work of the Imperial Security Bureau in the Andor TV series, they look much more competent and almost deserving of victory.
This is not an entirely new problem that came with the Disney TV shows, however, as even in the prequel trilogy the Galactic Republic was rather dismissive of the looming Sith threat, which eventually led to its downfall.
Considering all this, it's no wonder that many fans are drawn to the servants of evil, as the Empire, unlike the "good guys," seems like a much more qualified government, albeit an incredibly oppressive one.
To be fair, this is not a problem with the writing of the show, as it is clear that the audience is supposed to be baffled by the stupid politicians' behavior, and the trope is used in countless other works outside of Star Wars.
However, as already mentioned, this situation remains quite consistent in the franchise, which makes the Dark Side of the Force even more tempting for fans.
Ahsoka episode 4 will be released on September 5, 2023.
