‘Andor’ Might Not Win Acting Emmys, but Tony Gilroy Is Eyeing Another Big Prize

The Disney+ show’s acting was never recognised, and it seems like Andor’s Tony Gilroy is still getting madder at the TV Academy.
It wasn’t an easy time for Andor’s fans when Emmy nominations were announced back in July, though it starts hitting harder on the TV series’ production team a month later.
It’s fair to say quite many were outraged when it was revealed that Andor’s lead Diego Luna and the second season’s stand-out Genevieve O'Reilly didn’t get nods in their respective nominations, but the show’s writer and producer Tony Gilroy didn’t consider it as important as audiences’ positive reaction back then.
However, now it feels like the showrunner has joined Andor’s fans in their complaints by seemingly slamming the TV Academy — without renouncing his earlier words though.
Tony Gilroy Says It’s “Really Painful” to See ‘Andor’ Breakouts Snubbed at Emmys
Now feeling that this was in fact a unique opportunity for both Luna and O'Reilly to prove themselves during the awards season, Gilroy says he “would trade away a lot of other things” to give this chance to the latter who has delivered an incredible performance in the second season released this year.
“It's really painful. Genevieve O'Reilly, of the 24 episodes, she must be in 20 of them. She gives a five-year performance that's complicated, nuanced, and breathtaking. It's a lifetime achievement. Diego, the same thing, but I worry less about him”, Gilroy complained in an interview with Gold Derby recently, adding that the awards can actually raise the value of any actor, even if they’re already on top of the Hollywood list.
However, the showrunner stressed that he doesn’t believe Luna and O’Reilly’s performances would be forgotten because of those snubs, given how many raving reactions both actors got from Andor’s viewers.
“It really hurts, but I said it before: I do think the performances and the work that people did on the show is going to have a very long, a very long life. I don't think it has an expiration date on it that is anytime soon”, Gilroy added.
There’s One Emmy That Tony Gilroy Wants “Really Badly” for ‘Andor’
Despite missing out on major acting nominations, Andor still has 14 nods and has the same amount of chances to get a statuette at the upcoming Emmy ceremony which will take place on September 14.
However, it’s not the Outstanding Drama Series category that Gilroy really wants to win in, but something that connects to him personally.
As the writer also revealed in the interview, he “played music really seriously for quite a few years”, but ended up doing a completely different thing for television.
This is the reason why he now wants Andor to win the Original Music and Lyrics he’s nominated for alongside Nicholas Britell.
“Yes! I want this. I want this Emmy really badly. You could say that I'm smiling, but yeah, I want this one”, Gilroy admitted.
