Colin Farrell is back as a detective, but this time he's as charming as ever.

The second season of Nic Pizzolatto's True Detective received mixed reactions from viewers, but was definitely remembered for its well-written characters. One of them was Ray Velcoro, played by Colin Farrell, a detective who took on the investigation of the murder of a city official.

In the new series, Farrell also plays a detective, but this time it is the complete opposite of Ray. This time, the Irishman plays a totally charming and lovable professional: episode after episode, you will be amazed at how perfectly ironed suits and a vintage Corvette suit the actor.

On April 5, the series Sugar from I Am Legend screenwriter Mark Protosevich debuted on Apple TV+. And this is a reimagining of classic detective stories, with endless references to old movies.

What is Sugar About?

John Sugar is a private investigator who searches for missing people. He is hired by the famous Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel to find his granddaughter Olivia. A young woman with a history of drug addiction has not been heard from in a long time.

The rest of the family is convinced that the missing woman has simply started using again and will return home soon. Sugar shares Jonathan's concern: everything around him suggests that Olivia is in trouble.

Sugar is a Love Manifestation to Cinema

Sugar is not only filled with references to classic thrillers. In fact, the entire series is literally a collection of quotations. The writers made the main character a cinephile and a fan of old movies – he admits it right in the first episode. Moreover, he is sent to investigate a case involving a family from the world of cinema.

The plot turns into an endless declaration of love for cinema. Sugar constantly quotes movie characters and periodically remembers what movie the current moment in his life is like. He reads magazines like Sight & Sound, watches Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo or other old films on television, and even shows them to his dog.

But Sugar Is Also an Intricate and Gripping Detective Story

It might seem that with all the references the authors lose the most important thing – the main plot about the search for the missing granddaughter. But no, Sugar perfectly follows all the classic steps of a detective story.

The main character goes from witness to witness, and in the first few episodes things only get more complicated: corpses turn up, criminals appear, and the motives of literally every family member remain a mystery. Even the detective himself jokes that the case should be unraveling by now, but instead it's just growing.

Sugar is a unique detective story that catches the eye from the very first episode.

First Episodes of Sugar Are Available to Stream
