Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s character makes a surprising comeback in Suzanne Collins’ new prequel novel Sunrise on the Reaping and plays a crucial role in Haymitch’s plan to overthrow the Capitol. Here’s everything you need to know about Beetee before he returns in The Hunger Games’ next movie.

It’s still more than a year until Sunrise on the Reaping’s movie adaptation will hit the theatres worldwide, but things have already started moving for the next prequel which has recently got some of its leads.

Based on Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name, Sunrise on the Reaping will follow the events of the 50th Hunger Games and Haymitch Abernathy’s victory accompanied by his attempts to cause the downfall of the arena and the entire Capitol.

With lots of other exciting Hunger Games Easter eggs, the novel also witnesses the return of Beetee, the 34th Hunger Games winner portrayed by Jeffrey Wright in the original movie series.

Still, even with a pretty important role in Catching Fire, Beetee becomes one of the key allies for Haymitch in Sunrise on the Reaping — here’s how he contributes to the latter’s victory.

Beetee Latier is a District 3 tribute who won the 34th Hunger Games, 40 years before Katniss and Peeta were reaped.

Since District 3 isn’t really known for many Hunger Games winners, it was believed that Beetee didn’t really have chances to survive for long, especially considering that he lacked developed fighting skills.

However, nobody had a clue about Beetee’s talent for dealing with all sorts of electronics, so when the gong first sounded, he was the one to quickly collect electronic devices from the Cornucopia, later crafting a trap and killing the remaining six tributes.

As one of the winners who the Capitol kept punishing long after their victory, Beetee was forced to participate as a mentor in the 50th Hunger Games for which his son Ampert was reaped.

Earlier he also served as a mentor for Wiress, another District 3 tribute who won the 49th Hunger Games.

How Beetee Connects to Haymitch in Sunrise on the Reaping? (Spoiler Alert!)

Having been forced to watch his son prepare to die, Beetee was present in the Capitol during the 50th Hunger Games as one of the mentors, eventually encountering Haymitch on one of the training days.

By making everything look like he was trying to teach Haymitch how to make light out of a potato, Beetee was the first to plant the idea of blowing up the arena into Haymitch’s head, the plan which was later approved by the Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee.

Not long before the Games started, Beetee figured out how to replace some of the tributes’ tokens with explosives, which were later used by Haymitch in the arena once he was proclaimed the winner.

When Is Sunrise on the Reaping Being Released?

The movie is expected to arrive in theatres on November 20, 2026.
