Season 4, we're already burning for you.

Summary

  • Fans were thrilled to learn that Bridgerton would be renewed for at least two more years.
  • However, the wait for season 3 was excruciating and the next gap may be even worse.
  • At least we'll soon have a #Polin romance to keep us warm.

Remember our collective excitement when it was revealed that Bridgerton was confirmed for a third AND fourth season? Remember how we dreamed of the riches coming our way? The three-storey wigs, the giant dresses, the promenades around Hyde Park… the Dukes who do nothing all day but somehow still have six-pack abs.

We imagined ourselves frolicing alongside the Bridgerton siblings as they drank hot tea and shared hot T (it's not gossip if you're wearing jewels!). We swooned. We were naive enough to imagine that we might be seeing new episodes of Bridgerton within a year of the last season ending.

Ha! We were fools.

Waiting and Waiting

Bridgerton Season 2 was released approximately one hundred and forty-eight years ago (or two years ago if you want to go by the literal passage of time instead of by my feelings).

We should all be used to this by now – we aren't living in the age of network television any more, where a series would pump out an episode per week starting each fall, without fail. This is the Wild West of streaming, baby. Netflix will take as long as it needs to get new episodes of a show out there, as evidenced by the nearly 3-year gap between Stranger Things seasons.

Unfortunately, these gaps keep getting longer. After years of pining, we finally got a release date for Bridgerton Season 3: the series will drop the first half of its episodes on May 16 2024, and the remaining episodes on June 13.

No Release Date in Sight

Unfortunately we have no idea if the wait time for Season 4 will match this last gap of 26 months, or if it will be even longer.

Some fans are hoping that because season 4 was greenlit early, we won't have to wait nearly as long next time. But with the complicated production elements of Bridgerton (the popular ensemble cast, the period setting, etc) it seems too early to be getting optimistic.

If we do that, we might just have our hearts broken again.

What Can We Expect?

Speaking of broken hearts, this season of Bridgerton will follow the rise of Penelope Featherington. When last we left our heroine, she was broken hearted in more ways than one.

Penelope's alter ego, Lady Whistledown, had caused enormous suffering to her best friend Eloise, who at the end of Season 2 discovered Penelope's secret. The two had a huge fight, and looked like their lifelong friendship might be broken beyond repair.

Meanwhile, just when we thought that Penelope's secret crush Colin Bridgerton might be starting to appreciate Penelope's brains and charm, he was overheard talking to a pack of Regency BrosTM and scoffing at the very idea of courting Penelope.

This revelation caused Pen to run off in tears, though a recently released sneak peek shows that she will eventually manage to regain her dignity and give Colin a scathing set-down.

Who Stars in Season 4?

We have no idea which characters will be the focal point of Bridgerton's fourth season. Although the series is based on a series of popular novels by Julia Quinn, the adaptation has gone out of order to feature Colin and Penelope's romance in year three.

Fans had been expecting to see the Cinderella-esque romance between Benedict Bridgerton and the downtrodden maid Sophie Beckett. The news that Colin and Penelope's romance was being pushed up disappointed some fans, so it seems likely that Sophie and Benedict will feature in Season 4.

Fingers crossed that we won't have to wait too long…
