Let’s make daytime TV great again!

Summary:

  • In 2024, several CBS shows will be airing their final episodes, including fan favorites like Blue Bloods and Young Sheldon.
  • In early March, the network announced that it had renewed one of its soaps, The Young and the Restless, for 4 more seasons.
  • Now, CBS has officially greenlit a new soap opera in the works.

From the looks of it, CBS is ready to put all its eggs in one basket, and that basket is not what anyone was expecting. The network, best known for its primetime shows like The Big Bang Theory and its successful prequel, Young Sheldon, as well as law enforcement procedurals like NCIS, FBI and Blue Bloods, is now taking a turn.

The news that the network has renewed one of its staple daytime dramas, The Young and the Restless, for four new seasons at once spread like wildfire across the web. Fans of the show were obviously thrilled with the news, but it was still a surprising decision to say the least.

No matter how much daytime drama viewers love their favorite soaps, the overall mood of the fan community hasn't been the best over the past few years. Many believed that the remaining soaps were slowly but surely headed for cancellation.

This is exactly why CBS' decision to renew their existing soaps and produce a whole new one could end up being a game changer. Not just for the network, but for the genre in general.

What The Gates Is Going to Be About?

CBS’ upcoming daytime TV series titled The Gates will revolve around a wealthy black family residing in an upscale gated community. Considering how many dedicated soap opera viewers are black, and how little representation they see in ongoing dramas. The Gates may be an instant hit just based on its premise.

Sheila Ducksworth, the president of the CBS Studios NAACP venture, has also pointed out the importance of the audience that is often left behind. The Gates promises to be a love letter for them and allow a fresh perspective on the beloved genre:

“This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television. With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines and Black culture front and center, The Gates will have impactful representation, one of the key touchstones of the venture,” she said.

The last time we saw CBS release a new soap was back in 1987 when The Bold and the Beautiful hit the screens. It will be interesting to see how much of an upgrade the production and promotion of the new drama will see.

At the moment, there is no news about the cast or the release date of The Gates. So if you are interested in checking out the new show, be sure to stay tuned for all the news and behind-the-scenes updates to be the first to know about the premiere.
