But we’d much rather prefer him around.

Summary:

  • Even though Chicago Fire has been going strong for 12 years and was recently renewed for season 13, fans are losing faith in the show.
  • As sweet as Brett and Casey's departure was, the show feels empty without them.
  • Instead of introducing a solid replacement, Chicago Fire is sending away another major character, Kelly Severide.

So far, season 12 of Chicago Fire has left a bittersweet taste in the mouths of fans. While it has had some beautiful and heartfelt moments, it has also been filled with drama and has left viewers worried about just about every single member of the team.

While the departures of Gallo, Brett, and Casey were confirmed, the struggles of Severide, Herrmann, and Mouch only led viewers to believe that Firehouse 51 was about to undergo massive changes that no one was really prepared for. Strong leadership in times of uncertainty would have been appreciated, but instead, Kelly Severide will disappear... again.

Is Taylor Kinney Leaving Chicago Fire?

After the shock of last season, when Kelly Severide was largely absent due to Taylor Kinney's leave of absence, fans are still worried about whether he plans to leave the show for good. Without Kinney, who is one of the few original characters left on the show, Chicago Fire may lose the last bit of appeal it has for half of the fandom.

So far, there has been no news confirming the actor's intention to leave the show. However, there's also no news about who will be staying for Chicago Fire season 13, which was recently greenlit by NBC. What we do know is that there will be another Severide disappearance later this season.

And according to showrunner Andrea Newman, this time it will be serious as the show wants to cross over into the thriller genre:

“[It] starts with a shock — Kidd walks out to the apparatus floor in the middle of the night to see one of the rigs is missing, and Severide’s phone sits alone on the squad table. No one else is in sight. What the hell is going on?” she teased.

The events Newman describes take place in the 11th episode of the season. Given that Chicago Fire was forced to shorten the season to 13 episodes due to the WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes, this mystery could set the tone for the entire final stretch of the 12th season.

While Newman makes sure to highlight Stella as the MVP of this storyline, calling her a "warrior on a mission," our only hope is that she's careful enough to come back unharmed and bring her husband back as well. We're sure everyone would rather endure another few hours of their bickering than never see them together again.

If you are intrigued by the prospects that the second part of Chicago Fire season 12 paints, be sure to tune in to the new episodes every Wednesday on NBC.
