The new season already feels like a reboot.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy is an ABC medical procedural drama that has been on the air for nearly 20 years.
  • Season 20 will be marked by the removal of the titular character, Meredith Grey, from the center of the story.
  • Debbie Allen, who plays Catherine Fox on the show, promises that this won't affect the show too badly.

If there's one thing that's common knowledge about Grey's Anatomy, even to those who've never seen a single episode, it's the fact that pretty much no one leaves the show alive. Very few characters, aside from some of the original 5 interns, have had the luxury of having a proper ending and not giving up their lives on screen.

The whole range of sudden death methods has become a staple of the show, as well as the subject of many memes. However, it seems the Shondaland-produced hit is finally ready to embrace the change in 2024. Season 20 of Grey's Anatomy promises to be something no one has ever seen from the show before. A new beginning, if you will.

And that promise does not just refer to Ellen Pompeo's decision to step down from the show. The season promises to surprise viewers in more ways than one.

One of the popular myths about an upcoming season 20 was busted by the executive producer and the cast member of the show Debbie Allen, as the actress spoke to ET Online at the Kennedy Center Honors.

"I'm there as long as I am needed. It seems like I'm still needed. <...> I tell them, don't be killing me off yet. Not yet," she said to the reporter.

While Ellen Pompeo's departure from the show's regular cast was no surprise at this point, and fans knew what to expect, the news that Debbie Allen would be returning in full force for Season 20, both as an actress and as an executive producer, is far less predictable.

In fact, knowing Grey's Anatomy so well for so many years, fans were sure to get another heartbreaking exit at the beginning of the season. However, the show seems to be starting fresh and holding on to its cast tighter now that it has reached the two-decade mark.

What is a bit upsetting for fans is that Allen's character, Catherine Fox, is the one they would like to see go. After so many years on the show, she has proven to be a manipulative and deceitful character, and her cancer arc has been horribly dragged out over what will now be three seasons.

To see it left unresolved in any way would just be deeply unsatisfying, but that is the price fans will have to pay if they want to see what the new version of Grey's Anatomy has to offer.

If you're interested in watching the 20th anniversary season of the iconic show, tune in to ABC on March 14, 2024 for the premiere episode.
