'Dexter: Resurrection' has Set a Unique Record in Just 3 Episodes: Even the Original Series is as Far Away from It as the Moon

It looks like Michael C. Hall is with us for the long haul.
And so suddenly: after years of experiments, disappointments and very controversial endings, the Dexter franchise has produced not just some “spin-off with a stretch”, but the best season in its history. Even compared to the very same Dexter with which it all began.
The new season with the telling title Dexter: Resurrection started on July 11, and by the 25th it had already confidently taken the pedestal. 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and 9.1 on IMDb - no other series in the entire franchise has achieved such heights.
Neither the original 8-season Dexter (71% and 8.6), nor The New Blood (77% and 8.0), nor even the fresh prequel Original Sin (70% and 8.2). Resurrection turned out to be not a metaphor, but a literal rebirth of the franchise from the ashes.
If The New Blood raised questions like "what was all this for" and Original Sin tried to play on nostalgia, then Resurrection immediately set the pace. Michael C. Hall is back in business, Clyde Phillips is back at the helm.
The story picks up the plot right after the finale of The New Blood - and pretends that past mistakes never happened. Dark humor, stylish noir, new tricks of the "old dog" — everything is in place, only sharper, clearer and more confident.
In its first three days of release, the series drew 3.1 million viewers worldwide, making it the most-watched debut in Showtime history. Considering the original's bleak ending (no mention of the forest and the axe), those numbers are almost a miracle. And that miracle happened.
The franchise seemed to have run out of steam: in terms of plot, emotion, and visuals. And now it’s back on top. Judging by the fact that Clyde Phillips is already working on a spin-off about Trinity (that same John Lithgow), the franchise isn’t just getting a second wind — it’s kicked into high gear.
