The past few years were great for video game adaptations, and Holland and Wahlberg’s Uncharted is seemingly ready for a sequel, according to the star.

Summary:

  • Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg’s 2022 Uncharted was a solid commercial success.
  • The movie proved to be divisive, with the audience loving it and critics calling it terrible.
  • According to Mark Wahlberg, the sequel’s script is ready, and he was already told to “start growing his mustache.”

In 2022, the Venom director Ruben Fleischer brought Uncharted, one of the most popular adventure video game franchises, to theatrical screens. With a star-studded cast of Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas, the movie became a solid commercial success but divided the audience and the critics, as it often goes.

Uncharted Was Highly Divisive

There’s borderline nothing unambiguous about Fleischer’s movie. Some fans praised the casting decisions, while others ridiculed the movie for choosing the lithe and nimble Spider-Man star Tom Holland as the tough and masculine adventurer Nathan Drake. Some called it the perfect adaptation, but others considered it fan fiction.

The biggest divide was, however, the classic: the complete disagreement between critics and the audience. Rarely do these two groups agree on something, and Uncharted was definitely not one such instance, as illustrated by Rotten Tomatoes.

On the website, Holland and Wahlberg’s treasure hunter outing raked up a great 90% approval score among verified audiences and a solid 76% among all viewers. The movie’s Critic Score, however, tells a completely different story, with the rather embarrassing 40% general score only made worse by the top critics’ 23% rating.

Uncharted 2 Is Coming Soon

Critics and viewers’ clashed aside, the first movie was a commercial success, raking up over $407M at the global box office against a production budget of $120M. The decision to make a sequel doesn’t come as a surprise, but there hadn’t been any news about it until now as Mark Wahlberg just gave a promising Uncharted 2 update.

“I just got a call today that they got the script in. I can’t grow a real beard and mustache, but they said, ‘Start growing your mustache. It's gonna take a while.’ I’d be interested to see what the story’s like, and where that adventure takes us. But I’m excited; I know audiences really loved the first one,” the actor told Screen Rant.

With the script complete, it’s only a matter of time until the movie gets an official green light and moves to production, so buckle up for another Drake and Sully adventure if you’re a fan — or begin sharpening your pen if you’re a critic.
