Does Ellie Kill Abby in ‘The Last of Us’? Season 3 Clues & Game Spoilers, Explained

The Last of Us’ season 2 finale has finally witnessed Ellie and Abby’s first encounter since Joel’s death in episode 2, but that major cliffhanger might not be quite what you fear to see in the show’s season 3 — here’s why.
Ellie’s hunt for Abby came to its sudden end in the final episode of The Last of Us’ second season, with both having a tense meeting in the Seattle theatre that ends with at least one more major death.
Before the episode cuts to its final sequence that flashes back to Abby’s times as a WLF soldier, it becomes pretty clear that something is yet to happen between the two when Abby pulls the trigger and seemingly shoots at Ellie after killing Jesse.
Yes, but: The original video game’s plot line suggests there will be a different outcome for Ellie and Abby’s revenge quest for each other. Here’s what you can expect to see in The Last of Us’ third season.
Does Ellie Kill Abby At All in “The Last of Us” Video Game? (Heavy Spoilers Ahead!)
While the HBO series has only reached the characters’ first ever meeting since Joel was beaten to death by Abby, the game itself doesn’t end their storyline at this point.
There, Abby is in fact about to kill Ellie when she’s suddenly talked out of it by her friend and ally Lev. The two eventually leave Ellie and the surviving part of her group all alone in the theatre.
The impact: Realizing it might have been a sign for her to stop murdering others and probably to prevent her own death, Ellie sticks to the group’s initial plan and comes back to Jackson.
Soon, she comes to terms with her unrested desire to bring vengeance on Abby and embarks on yet another search for her, this time in California.
When they meet for a second time, it’s Ellie who dominates and almost makes Abby drown when she realises once again that Abby’s death won’t bring Joel back anyway.
The outcome: Eventually, the two let each other go for good.
‘The Last of Us’ Creator Teases a Major Shift in Season 3 Storyline and Pedro Pascal’s Possible Return
Even though the show’s season 2 finale has quickly been labeled “worse than Game of Thrones”, The Last of Us’ next instalment might be the one everyone has been waiting for.
What’s next: Catherine O’Hara was the first to drop a bombshell about The Last of Us’ focus shift for Abby in the next season, which was later seemingly confirmed by the series’ showrunner Craig Mazin.
“Abby is the hero of her story. Wherever we go next, we’ll always be centering on somebody, whether it’s Ellie and Dina, or Abby and Owen … [But] everything is under the cloud or sunlight of Joel — what Joel did to Abby and what Abby did to Joel,” he revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Plus: On top of that, fans will likely get another gift in the form of a flashback scene featuring Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Gabriel Luna’s Tommy.
“Next season we probably will have a lot more flexibility [to tell side stories]. Maybe a side trip to do Joel and Tommy terrorizing the countryside, we’ll never know. I wouldn’t have guessed we’d have a short story about Joel’s dad before we wrote the season. [Tommy’s] been in war, and we also know that for some time, he and Joel were doing some pretty bad things. So there is the potential of seeing this other side of Tommy, and that is now about him delivering on his understood promise to his brother”, Mazin added.
