Eddie Murphy Confirms Donkey Spinoff Is Coming — But Can He Really Carry a Film Alone?

His charm works in small bursts — but can it stretch?
I’ve always loved Donkey — let’s get that out of the way first. Eddie Murphy’s voice, the jokes, the energy... he’s one of the best parts of the Shrek universe. So when I read that he’s finally getting his own movie, I was intrigued — but also a bit worried.
In a recent ScreenRant interview, Eddie Murphy confirmed that while the cast is still recording for Shrek 5, the Donkey movie is officially on the way.
"We’re still in the booth, and literally, we’re still doing Shrek," he said. "We start in September on Donkey, we’re doing a Donkey one… his own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They’ve written this funny story."
He also clarified: "Donkey’s going to have his own movie, like how Puss in Boots had his own movie."
Here’s What Fans Are Saying — And Honestly, I Get It
Scrolling through the reactions, I felt like I wasn’t alone in my cautious optimism. Here’s what others had to say on Reddit:
"He’s also a pretty good character. I hate this shit (everything as a franchise) but it could work."
"I mean maybe it will be good, but is anyone else tired of endless sequels, spinoffs and remakes?"
"Sounds like a horrible idea. Comic relief spinoffs never work."
But this one really summed up how I feel:
"I mean I really do hope a Donkey movie is good, but his whole thing is being a bit dumb and silly. You need a non-silly character to balance him out, otherwise it’s just ridiculous stuff nonstop."
Exactly. Donkey shines because he’s next to Shrek, Fiona, or Puss — characters who ground him. Without that contrast, I worry the chaos might be too much. I hope they pull it off… but I’m definitely keeping my expectations in check.
