It seems that the show's best days are in the past.

For five years, Emily in Paris has faithfully served its primary function as a bright, light, unburdensome show that allows us to relax.

The fifth season doesn't attempt a revolution, but it introduces some changes to the familiar formula. Is it worth continuing to follow, or has the time come to put an end to the Parisian and Roman adventures of the cheerful American?

The new chapter doesn't begin in the French capital, but in sunny Rome. The marketing agency Grateau is trying to expand its business in Italy, and Emily hopes to manage the local office.

Muratori, a fashion house, becomes a key client. After leaving Paris and Gabriel behind, Emily starts dating the company's heir, Marcello.

Season 5 Attempts to Deepen the Main Character, Making Her More Human & Realistic

The most significant change in Season 5 is the attempt to portray Emily as more than an "advertising goddess" whose ideas are brilliant and universally accepted.

For the first time in a while, the character faces professional setbacks, and her decisions and tenacity are revealed to be imperfect. The writers subtly explore Emily's psychology as a straight-A student obsessed with perfectionism and afraid of missing out.

This adds humanity to her character, though we shouldn't expect deep character development or serious drama. She's still the same cheerful Emily – she just sometimes makes mistakes.

Don't Expect Anything New From Season 5 – It's the Same Old Fast Food Show

Despite minor shifts in the portrayal of the main character, the fifth season doesn't change the formula fundamentally. The show continues to follow a well-worn path strewn with clichés and predictable plot points.

It still has numerous plotlines that drag on without achieving anything substantial. Love triangles, including one of the most pointless and contrived in the series' history, are inserted solely for false melodrama.

The weak script is saved only partially by the impeccable visuals – enchanting views of Rome provide a pleasant, albeit temporary, distraction from the dramatic flaws. Maybe it's time to say goodbye to Emily once and for all?
