Fans have already slammed You’s season 5 for a dull ending, and the show’s creators might be now regretting the decision to throw another option away — here’s why this one could have actually worked.

The last week marked Joe Goldberg’s last psychedelic adventure in Netflix ’s You that wrapped its story up with a fifth and final season.

The series gave its lead a seemingly satisfying closure, finally having him brought to justice by none other than his new potential victim, though this was definitely not what many fans wanted Joe to deal with.

However, there was another idea for the finale which You’s creators thought would be way too easy for the book-obsessed killer. Ironically, this is exactly what could have offered the entire show a refreshing perspective.

You Writers Wanted to Make Joe a Ghost

Joe Goldberg’s journey throughout all the previous four seasons of You was so chaotic that him ending up in jail after everything he’s been through was… well, just dull.

Still, the show’s writers and producers thought exactly the opposite, rejecting the idea that could have worked out perfectly fine with You’s fans.

“We went through many different options, one of which being that he did die at the hands of Bronte. I was even remembering a version where he was shot. And [the audience] didn’t realize that he shot until the very last episode, and then he realizes he’s a ghost," the series’ co-showrunner and executive producer Justin W. Lo revealed in an interview with People.

This does sound like an opportunity lost forever since Joe dying at the hands of Bronte would be a perfect way to mirror every other previous victim of Joe dying at his own hands.

The show’s production team came up with a different kind of punishment though, as exec Michael Foley also admitted that they “liked him not knowing the touch of a lover”.

You Fans Wished to See Only One Recurring Character in Season 5

Even though Joe himself definitely moved on from the events of season 3, many of the show’s viewers didn’t — and kept hope for not a good finale, but at least for a beloved character’s return (which didn’t happen after all).

“I thought they’d bring back Victoria Pedretti as Love just once even as a hallucination. God, they had peaked with S2&3 with Love as a female lead”, Redditor rae_is_rad wrote in a show-related thread.

“Ever since love died they lacked a Female figure for Joe's obsession”, Chipopo69 got to notice.

“Honestly, was hoping for a love scene as for me she’s been the standout when it came to Joe’s romances. Glad we got some Beck scenes. Hate how the story ended with Brontë… like we care about that character who’s been here for all of 5 minutes?” Jiinnxx_ also chimed in.
