You Season 5 has fans upset, but Penn Badgley thinks it's brilliant.

The highly anticipated finale of You has finally hit Netflix, bringing Joe Goldberg's twisted story to its natural conclusion. Penn Badgley, who brought the complex character to life over five seasons, seemed confident about the ending.

“I love the way we’ve ended it. I think it’s responsible, it’s compelling, it’s dramatically and emotionally resonant,” he told Access Hollywood.

But the fans do not feel the same way about You ending.

In the finale, Joe Goldberg is imprisoned for life. But for some fans, this ending seemed too safe, too conventional. After five seasons of shocking twists, this feels like they took the easy way out. Here's what the internet had to say.

“It could have been way better if they ended it with him dying in the cage or in that fire, cuz whatever the f– was that ending with Bronte,” Redditor ShAnTaNu_1000 said.

“I didn't care for how it ended either. I thought back to New York would bring back the S1-3 vibe but sadly not it kept the S4 tone,” Redditor Dull_Raspberry_8285 shared.

“This finale was trash, I'm sorry I even accepted S4, but this was BAD. The could've chosen the Dexter - Dexter: New Blood approach, him escaping at the end just to be caught or killed by someone from the past in the final episode,” one Redditor wrote.

Yet despite such harsh reviews, there was a deeper meaning to this seemingly “boring” ending. During his interview with The Los Angeles Times, Penn Badgley explained it himself:

“We gave as much justice as the whole concept could take without breaking it. The show ends in a place where it’s like, what do you do with this? What do we do with with male violence? It’s a really serious question. It’s not at all simple to even approach an answer, if we’re really trying to consider the humanity of everybody and true justice. I think it ends in a place that we veer toward responsibility rather than away from it.”
