Peter Griffin will be back with more Christmas mischief.

Summary

  • After the conclusion of Family Guy Season 22, a new round is coming in October.
  • At the same time, two holiday specials have been announced.
  • They will be released exclusively on Hulu.

Despite the two-year hiatus following its cancellation after Season 3 (the show was renewed in 2005), Family Guy is still a major fixture on television. On January 31, 2024, the iconic animated sitcom celebrated its 25th anniversary, and after Season 22 wrapped on April 17, there's at least one more season to go. In addition, for more than 10 years, the show has aired on Hulu the day after new episodes air on Fox.

The era of traditional broadcasting is gradually being replaced by the dominance of streaming services, and these circumstances are also affecting Family Guy. More and more emphasis is being placed on Hulu, and if the show continues to be released in the coming years, it may eventually move from Fox to the Disney- owned streaming service.

As evidence of this, two new episodes were recently announced that will be released exclusively on Hulu.

New Episodes Announced

Family Guy is not only one of the longest-running animated sitcoms, but also a television project in general. And even though the ratings of the last few seasons are much lower than those of the new The Simpsons ( but that has always been the case), fans still love the show and look forward to new episodes, as the show's creator Seth MacFarlane, who also provided the voices of Peter, Brian and Stewie Griffin, acknowledges.

'At this point, I don’t see a good reason to stop. People still love it. It makes people happy and it funds some good causes. It's a lot of extraneous cash that you can donate to Rainforest Trust and you can still go out to dinner that night,' he told TV Line.

'There was a time when I thought, "it's time to wrap it up." At this point, we've reached escape velocity. I don't know that there's any reason to stop at this point unless people get sick of it. Unless the numbers show that people just are, "Eh, we don't care about Family Guy anymore." But that hasn't happened yet.'

And so, just under a week ago, it was revealed that two new Holiday Specials will hit our small screens before Season 23 arrives. Nothing is known about them yet, except that they will debut exclusively on Hulu in 2024.

Every Holiday Special in Family Guy History

No specific dates have been set for the two new specials, but based on the release dates of the previous Christmas episodes, we can deduce a release window for these two as well. You can see a list of all the holiday episodes released so far below:

  1. S03E16 — A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas
  2. S09E07 — Road to the North Pole
  3. S11E08 — Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
  4. S12E08 — Christmas Guy
  5. S13E06 — The 2000-Year-Old Virgin
  6. S15E09 — How the Griffin Stole Christmas
  7. S16E09 — Don't Be a Dickens at Christmas
  8. S18E09 — Christmas Is Coming
  9. S19E09 — The First No L
  10. S20E10 — Christmas Crime
  11. S22E09 — The Return of the King (of Queens)

So, When Will the New Holiday Specials Be Released?

Each episode was usually released a week or two before Christmas: thus, the earliest release was How the Griffin Stole Christmas, which aired on December 11, 2016, and the latest was Jesus, Mary and Joseph!, which aired on December 23, 2012. In other words, the next two episodes should also be expected around this time, most likely in the second or third decade of December 2024.

Meanwhile, Season 23 is scheduled for release in October 2024. That means it will be accompanied by two Holiday Specials available only to Hulu subscribers.
