Attention true-crime fans: the new documentary will leave your teeth chatter from fear.

Summary:

  • Netflix continues its successful true-crime streak with a new documentary, following the investigation of the Chilean cult.
  • It’s going to feature the sect’s members and evidence of their ritual crimes.

The success of Netflix’s recent true-crime documentary titled What Jennifer Did, which is currently the No. 1 film in the platform’s global top, proved people’s genuine interest in the horrifying genre. Jumping on this hype train, Netflix is going to release another documentary, this time focusing on a series of crimes of the whole religious cult.

It starts by depicting the leader of the Chilean sect, Ramón Castillo Gaete, who claimed to be a reincarnation of an Inca god, known as Antares de la Luz. He gathered people with his teachings that combined elements of esotericism, astrology, and spiritualism.

Their practices, which involved the use of psychedelics, orgies and nocturnal rituals under the stars, once went far beyond the reasonable limits. When one of the cult members became pregnant with his baby, Gaete proclaimed him to be the Antichrist, who is responsible for the then-upcoming end of the world on 21 December 2012 (good times…).

The documentary centers on the very crime of the relentless ritual sacrifice of the newborn baby in a bonfire in the hills of Colliguay. Through interviews, chronicles and expert analysis it follows not only the investigation of the murder, but the whole path of creating such an occult group and their beliefs, which led to such an extreme act.

Known as the Sect of Colliguay, this cult lost its leader short after he was declared wanted in 2013, with some of its members having been arrested and tried for their crimes. However, the movie’s creators managed to find those who participated in the sect and who knew Gaete personally to perform a proper study of this cult.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

The theme of the cult organizations were always in high demand of the audience, from Polanski’s classic horror masterpiece Rosemary’s Baby (1968) to Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and A24’s massively successful Midsommar (2019).

Such a social phenomenon serves as a nail-biting movie topic to dive into people’s incomprehensible beliefs and macabre rituals and to be frightened by the fact it’s still relevant in today’s world, with such sects hiding behind the walls of the city’s buildings.

Watch the true-crime based on such a disconcerting case, as The Doomsday Cult of Antares De La Luz is scheduled to be aired on Netflix on April 25.
