From Folklore to Film: 'Troll 2' Promises More Monster Action When It Streams This December

Roar Uthaug returns to direct sequel as Norwegian monster flick Troll 2 drops first teaser.
The Norwegian creature feature Troll was released on Netflix in December 2022. The film proved to be a massive hit for the streaming giant, prompting an immediate order for a sequel. Troll 2 is set to premiere on December 1st, and today a teaser trailer has been unveiled online.
For those needing a quick refresher, the original Troll follows the story of something enormous awakening deep within Norway’s Dovre mountain after being trapped for over a thousand years. As it rampages through the landscape, destroying everything in its path, the creature heads towards Norway’s capital city. The question is: how do you stop something that was once thought to be mere folklore?
In Troll 2, Uthaug reunites with writer Espen Aukan and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud of Motion Blur. The new film’s synopsis reads: When a dangerous new troll is awakened, unleashing chaos across Norway, beloved adventurers Nora, Andreas, and Captain Kris find themselves on their most perilous mission yet. To halt the creature’s destructive rampage, they must forge new alliances and delve into Norway’s ancient history for answers. As time runs out and the troll’s destruction widens, our heroes face seemingly insurmountable odds to save their homeland from falling into darkness. The cast includes Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, and Sara Khorami.
Interestingly, while several of Uthaug’s previous films have spawned sequels, he has not directed any of them himself — until now. His earlier sequels for Cold Prey, the follow-up to his fantasy film Magic Silver, The Quake (a sequel to The Wave), and the long-delayed Tomb Raider sequel (which MGM lost rights to after years in development hell) were all helmed by different directors. With Troll 2, Uthaug is finally returning to direct a sequel he helped create himself. He previously remarked that Troll had been “an idea developing in my mind for over 20 years,” and that bringing it to life with Netflix and Motion Blur was “a dream come true.” He expressed excitement about unleashing this Norwegian monster on audiences worldwide.
The original Troll ranked in the Top 10 across 93 countries and hit number one in Norway, the U.S., and the UK upon its release on Netflix. It amassed an astonishing 103 million views within its first 91 days, making it Netflix’s most popular non-English film ever.
