Who would’ve guessed that the much-acclaimed author of The Song of Ice and Fire would agree that the best episode of Game of Thrones was the one scripted by him?

George Martin is a legendary author who was launched into international stardom after HBO bought the right for a live-action TV adaptation of his magnum opus, The Song of Ice and Fire book series. Today, GRRM’s name is widely known to many people who’ve never even picked up one of his books — but loved the show.

Truly, Game of Thrones was the biggest TV show of all time that also grabbed the titles of most pirated, most watched, and many others throughout the years of its prime glory. Some seasons were obviously better than others (all of them better than S8, that’s for sure), but overall, Game of Thrones was a sensational experience.

Recently, Vanity Fair honored GoT by including it in its thorough list of “25 Perfect TV Episodes From the Last 25 Years.” While a quarter of a century is an incredibly large chunk of time that saw thousands of TV shows, Game of Thrones booked one of the spots on the list — specifically, Vanity Fair chose the episode “Blackwater.”

George Martin was quick to react to the news and shared his thoughts on the achievement in his blog. After ironically thanking Vanity Fair for recognizing his genius, the author admitted that he agreed with the episode the media chose.

“[Vanity Fair saw perfection in] ‘Blackwater,’ one of the episodes I wrote for Game of Thrones. I scripted four. And yes, ‘Blackwater’ is my own favorite of those, although I thought ‘The Lion and the Rose’ turned out very well too, and I have a soft spot for that one,” GRRM wrote.

It’s only right that the one episode of Game of Thrones that got to be called “perfect” was written by George Martin himself: after all, this man created Westeros and knows its politics and characters better than anyone else. But we also couldn’t help but chuckle at the author’s ironic humility when he agreed with the sentiment.

Of course, it’s the best episode, Mr. Martin. It was you who scripted it. You’re a globally acclaimed genius. Now, how about you script The Winds of Winter, too?
