George Martin Reveals the Size of 'Winds of Winter' & How Many Pages Are Ready

“A Song of Ice and Fire”’s long-promised next chapter just got a huge update, but there’s still some work to be done. Here’s what George Martin has said about his progress on “The Winds of Winter” this time.
Things might have just become more complicated for George Martin’s long-suffering “The Winds of Winter”, though it will still likely give some fans more hope for ever reading “A Song of Ice and Fire”’s next instalment.
The novel has been a subject for debate among Game of Thrones’ numerous fans, with many not getting tired of slamming George Martin for going way too slow with his brainchild.
Apart from that, the author’s useless updates on his progress made the feud all the way more confrontational, yet Martin once might have also provided us with something really important.
George Martin Says “The Winds of Winter” Will Be Larger Than Any Other “A Song of Ice and Fire” Novel
It’s been almost 15 years since Martin announced he would start working on “The Winds of Winter”, and though many fans suggested he didn’t really care about the book all this time, it might be that Martin did in fact take things slowly.
Several months ago the author revealed his “The Winds of Winter” would contain at least 1500 pages, then also giving an update on the matter and saying that Game of Thrones’ fans better get prepared for the future novel’s impressive volume.
“It’s a big, big book, I’ve said that before. It’s a challenging book. It’s probably gonna be a larger book than any of the previous volumes in the series”, Martin said during a live stream interview with Penguin Random House.
Additionally, the author confirmed he had already written around 1200 pages, with 400-500 more yet to be added to the novel — that, however, was something he said a couple of years ago, which right now isn’t a very promising perspective.
‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Say They’re “3/4 Done” with George Martin
The author’s viral quote about him being 3/4 finished with “The Winds of Winter” didn’t take long for Game of Thrones’ viewers to react — and there wasn’t a single word of support for Martin out there.
“I am 3/4 done with him”, Redditor Occma said in a news-related thread.
“Taking him at his word, he's gotten 3/4 of the way in 11 years. This means the "whole way" would be, rounding up, a total of 15 years. Therefore, we can expect the book to come out in 2026”, Gwydden predicted.
“It's OK George. I've used this one with my boss before, too”, eldreth joked.
“My brother has also been halfway done with his thesis for the last 3 years”, tebyho21 chimed in.
