'Gladiator', 'Napoleon'… and Now 'Battle of Britain': Scott Returns to War on a Grand Scale

At 87, the director keeps chasing history’s grandest battles on screen.
Keeping an eye on cinema’s great storytellers, it’s impossible to miss the news that Ridley Scott has chosen Battle of Britain as his next film.
Written by Joe Penhall, it revisits the 1940 air campaign when the RAF and FAA defended the UK against the Nazis. Scott himself calls it a "war movie." With the Bee Gees biopic left behind, his appetite for grand history clearly remains intact.
Relentless at 87
After Napoleon with Gladiator II , Scott shows no sign of slowing. He even squeezed in The Dog Stars, an adaptation of Peter Heller’s post-apocalyptic novel with Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley, set for 2026. For most, that would be enough. For Scott, it seems to be just another chapter.
Bee Gees Grounded, Bombers Ready
The long-rumoured Bee Gees film seems to have collapsed over money.
"I was being asked to go too far," he told The Guardian. "I’m expensive, but I’m good."
Typical Scott: blunt, confident, and never shy of moving on. Isn’t that attitude exactly what keeps him restless — and still relevant?
