Good Omens deserved more – much more.

In 2019, Good Omens, an adaptation of the cult novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, premiered on Amazon Prime Video and the series quickly gained a devoted fan base.

However, in 2024, Gaiman was charged with sexual assault. First, the author left the project, and then the final season was shortened to a single special episode. Instead of six full episodes, the special is 90 minutes long. Unfortunately, that isn't the best way to say goodbye.

What Is the 'Good Omens' Finale About?

The plot revolves around the Second Coming. Aziraphale is in charge of the preparations, but the plan falls apart when the angels lose sight of Jesus. The Messiah secretly departs for Earth.

Meanwhile, chaos intensifies in the heavenly office due to the disappearance of the Book of Life, an artifact that records the history of every being. Without it, the universe could simply disappear.

Aziraphale returns to London to seek Crowley's help. The retired demon is drinking, sleeping in a back alley, and grieving the loss of his beloved car. Crowley agrees to join forces with Aziraphale, but first, they must retrieve his vintage Bentley.

The 'Good Omens' Special Suffers From an Overload of New Characters & Side Storylines

The creators faced a daunting task – in just 90 minutes, they had to immerse viewers in a familiar world, introduce new characters, keep the old ones, and wrap up the story. Given the limited time, they were barely able to accomplish this.

The first act drags on unnecessarily – it would have been appropriate for the first episode of the season, but not for a single episode. The writers rush through introducing new characters, such as the gangster who took Crowley's car and his equally menacing daughter.

In a full season, these characters could have been a welcome addition to the universe. However, in a single special episode, they overwhelm the plot.

The story of Jesus, by contrast, requires more time. The Messiah wanders London, misses his twelve companions, and befriends the card player Harry. This could have been one of the best plotlines of the special, but it's barely hinted at before being abandoned.

Michael Sheen and David Tennant Try to Save What They Can

Despite its flaws, the finale has its merits. Good Omens continues to thrive thanks to the energetic performances of the lead actors, the witty dialogue, and the cozy setting.

Michael Sheen and David Tennant never disappoint – their chemistry, the sparks between their characters, and their signature humor remain top-notch. Even when the script falters, the actors carry the scene with their charm alone.

In this sense, the special episode is a fitting farewell to the characters but not to the series.

The Good Omens finale almost never happened. Amazon Prime Video deserves thanks for the opportunity to witness once again the machinations of higher powers and bid farewell to beloved characters. However, the feeling of missed opportunities lingers until the very end.
