There won’t be anyone like them.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy is an ABC medical procedural drama that has been on the air since 2004.
  • For its 20th season, the last original member of the intern cast, Ellen Pompeo, who portrays Meredith Grey, will take a step back from the show.
  • In order to let all the current intern characters shine, the comparisons to MAGIC need to stop, fans believe.

It is very difficult to maintain the same level of quality while working on a television show that lasts for two decades. The writers have to be careful about the past characters and their choices, but not get too attached to them so that the show can move forward. The actors need to make sure they embrace the changes their characters will inevitably go through.

And the viewers, for their part, must try to embrace the change with open minds and hearts. In the case of Grey's Anatomy, fans seem to be struggling with this.

The consensus is that the best Grey's Anatomy that ever aired was back in the '00s when the show was just getting started. And the chemistry between the original intern group, MAGIC (Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie, and Cristina), was one of the biggest reasons for that.

However, it's been years since the last member of the group, other than Meredith, left the show, and now it's time to finally let go of the idea of them.

Grey’s Anatomy New Intern Group

Season 19 introduced the new group of interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and fans seem to have taken a liking to all of them. Portrayed by Niko Terho, Adelaide Kane, Midori Francis, Harry Shum Jr. and Alexis Floyd, the new interns' personalities and chemistry with one another may be just what the show needs to move forward.

If the intention is to make Grey's Anatomy something of a legacy show, it is a great idea to add a character who would continue the line of one of the beloved ones who has already left. Thus, another Shepherd was introduced in the form of Lucas Adams, Derek and Amelia's nephew. Accompanying him was Meredith Grey 2.0 in the face of Simone Griffith.

Mika Yasuda seems to be a perfect counterpart to Cristina from season 1, genius and a little rough around the edges, while Benson Kwan seems to be a bad boy for the sake of the show having one, just like it was with Alex Karev.

The parallels are striking, but there's one thing missing: the new guys aren't MAGIC. And it's best to start treating them like standalone characters now, rather than replacements for fan favorites, before you're hugely disappointed by a plot twist or a romance that doesn't fit their given descriptions.

If you're willing to give the newbies a chance to prove themselves worthy of a real storyline away from the original five, you should tune in to ABC on March 14, 2024, for the premiere episode of Grey's Anatomy's anniversary season 20.

Until then, you can refresh your memories of season 19 by rewatching it on Hulu.
