Hopefully, we’ll get some clarity soon.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy has been at the top of the medical drama game for 20 years, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
  • The show was recently renewed by ABC for season 21.
  • However, with the contracts of many of the show's veterans expiring this year, there is a chance that the show will see a lot of exits.

One of the things that Grey’s Anatomy has learned relatively quickly, just a few years into the show, is to not get attached to anyone or anything. Shonda Rhimes, as great of a writer as she is, doesn’t have any difficulties with cutting any ties. If a character needs to go, they will, and 90% of the time, their exit won’t be peaceful either.

Even though so far the 20th season has been nothing but a blast, especially for the long-time viewers, caught in nostalgia for the 2000s Grey’s Anatomy vibes, it may not be so sweet and happy much longer.

Who Is Leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

There is no need to panic yet, as there have been no official reports of any of the core cast members leaving the show during or after season 20. However, there is information that some of the cast members have contracts that expire this year, so their return would depend on their renewals.

According to TVLine, ABC will have to work on new offers for Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Caterina Scorsone and Camilla Luddington.

This means that in a worst-case scenario, the show could lose Miranda Bailey, Richard Webber, Owen Hunt, Teddy Altman, Amelia Shepherd or Jo Wilson.

While many fans will be happy to say goodbye to some of these characters, it would be much harder to say goodbye to others. Drs. Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber, for example, though completely worn out from all the drama over the years, are the show's original characters who've been around since season 1.

Though there is nothing now that could lead to one or more deaths in the plot, every single viewer who has been watching the show for years knows that it was never too hard to come up with an event that would lead to the death of one or more characters. The plane crash in season 8 and the mass shooting in season 6 are just the most gruesome examples.

So far, the future looks pretty bright for all the targeted characters. However, that could change soon, and viewers may still be kept in the dark.

The best thing you can do is tune in to Grey's Anatomy every Thursday on ABC and keep an eye out for more casting news and behind-the-scenes updates!
