Guillermo del Toro Hopes He’s Dead Before This Happens to Movies
Frankenstein’s director isn’t playing when it comes to pure art of cinema.
With the rise of modern technologies, filmmakers can make their wildest dreams come true on the big screens, but for many of them this possibility is still limited to some moral rules.
Particularly, this concerns Gothic master Guillermo del Toro who doesn’t really mind taking use of the best cinema equipment to create his fantasy worlds — quite the contrary, the director has already stunned his fans with some previous fascinating works and is about to do the same with Frankenstein, coming to Netflix on November 7.
Still, like many other prominent directors in Hollywood right now, del Toro would rather die than let technologies take the entire control over the creative process — and he’s especially radical about one system, the popularity of which is growing with a threatening speed.
Guillermo del Toro Hopes He Dies Before AI Starts Making Movies

It’s fair to say not only del Toro has been concerned about the AI’s power in the world lately, with Hollywood being engulfed by massive strikes in 2023 due to this reason and AI actors appearing out of nowhere in the industry’s newsfeed.
The director, however, believes the need for AI emerged in all kinds of other spheres, but certainly not in the movie industry — which never asked for such an assistance.
In a recent interview with Wired, del Toro revealed he had never thought about making his Frankenstein as a message about AI developers pretending to be Gods like Victor Frankenstein.
“I was not interested in making any [in this film]. I understand [using] it in engineering and biochemistry and mathematics, because those are permutations. In art, I don’t think anyone asked for it. Nobody raised their hand and said, “Could you invent this?” the director stated.
Apart from that, he also added that he really hopes he won’t get to see AI-made movies in his life.
“I mean, I'm extremely glad I'm 61. So I don't have to worry about this. With a little bit of luck, I'll die before that takes root”, del Toro said.
Guillermo del Toro Is Making a Crime Movie Next — For a Specific Reason

Now that his Frankenstein is just days away from arriving on global streaming after having spent decades in the development hell, del Toro might be slowly moving towards his other ideas and exciting new projects, with one of those going into a completely different direction than the most of his works.
In the same interview, del Toro reflected on his future plans in the industry, revealing more details about his upcoming crime thriller Fury which will star Frankenstein’s actor Oscar Isaac.
“I just think crime is so interesting, because it allows you to investigate human nature. I'm very intrigued by that. In my library, the main library is fantasy, and the second most numerous is crime”, the director added.
Meanwhile, Frankenstein is arriving on Netflix on November 7.
