This year’s box office keeps showing the most unexpected results.

Summary:

  • Guy Ritchie ’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is finally out in the cinemas worldwide, but it doesn’t seem to live up to all the highest expectations that were circulating months before its release.
  • Apart from all other reasons, the action comedy starring Henry Cavill faced a big rival in the box office — and the latter has just become A24’s highest grossing film ever.
  • The future prospects for Guy Ritchie’s new movie are not very positive either given that this week will mark two more major movies’ releases.

Though Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare did a bit better than it was predicted during its first weekend in the cinemas, everything still seems bad for the director’s highly anticipated movie.

The spy action comedy starring Henry Cavill was made with a clear intention to kick it off with the most impressive results given promising scores of 73% from critics and 94% from the audience — but now the chances are that the film won’t be able to break even.

Henry Cavill’s position may be the most fortunate here as The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare did outperform the actor’s most recent flop Argylle, but it still doesn’t make things better for the brand new movie being shattered by a very unexpected competitor.

Though it was foreseen ever since the first day of its release, Alex Garland ’s Civil War is still dominating the box office leaving behind Guy Ritchie’s new film and a high-rated horror thriller Abigail.

Thus, after two weeks spent in the cinemas, Civil War garnered $45 million becoming A24’s highest grossing film of all time while The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare ended up grossing only $9 million during the first weekend — which is a bad start for a movie with a $60 million budget.

The box office this April clearly demonstrates how affected the industry was by last year’s massive strikes — and it will take some time for the cinema world to fully recuperate.

Now, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will face an even fiercer competition as this week marks two more major releases — Challengers, which stars Zendaya and is expected to garner at least $20 million during the opening, and The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in the leading roles.
