HBO, 'Game of Thrones' Star in Lead Role, 100/100 Audience Score: Found You the Perfect 'Mobland' Replacement for Ritchie
The entire season has been released in its entirety, so you won't have to wonder whether everything will turn into a bore after the pilot or not.
While fans of Mobland are digesting the announcement of the second season, HBO Max has already offered an alternative. The new British series This City Is Ours quickly burst into the tops around the world, received 91 and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and confidently jumped over the new Guy Ritchie with its 75 from critics and 78 from viewers.
Dirty Liverpool instead of polished London
The show tells the story of a gangster empire in Liverpool torn apart by internal conflicts. The plot centers on Ronnie Phelan (the magnificent Sean Bean), a crime boss facing a choice: retire or hold on to a crumbling empire. One of his comrades is trying to save the remnants of the old guard, and his son, on the contrary, is ready to burn everything to the ground and build a new one.
This isn't another gangster series where only shootouts and pathos matter. Shakespearean conflicts, family betrayals, and real drama are at the forefront. Compared to the more stylized and glossy Mobland, This City Is Ours seems much tougher, more truthful, and modern.
It's also filmed with the same attention to detail as The Crown — it's no coincidence that the same producers from Left Bank Pictures worked on it.
Why is This City a new favorite?
Because it works. It's already being compared to the best seasons of The Wire and Peaky Blinders, only with a more daring pace and a distinctive British accent. In addition to Sean Bean, the cast includes James Nelson-Joyce, Jack McMullen, Darcy Shaw, and Hannah Onslow, familiar to viewers from British hits of recent years.
Dynamic plot, gorgeous camera work and an atmosphere that smells like the street - and here we get one of the best crime series of the year.
