The Television Critics Association announced the winners of its 42nd annual awards on August 20, 2026 — by press release again, no ceremony. The top prize, Program of the Year, went to a six-episode Canadian hockey romance that the Television Academy is not permitted to consider.

Heated Rivalry is ineligible for the Primetime Emmys because Bell Media's Crave financed and produced it entirely in Canada. HBO Max functions only as its US distributor, and signed on after season 1 was already finished. Academy rules require a co-production with American partners — financially and creatively, arranged before filming starts.

What the show is

Created, written, and directed by Jacob Tierney (Letterkenny, Shoresy) and adapted from Rachel Reid's Game Changers novels, it follows Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie), rival Major League Hockey stars carrying on a secret years-long relationship. Six episodes, released Fridays from November 28 to December 26, 2025. It became Crave's most-watched original ever and HBO Max's biggest debut for an acquired non-animated title since the platform launched in 2019.

The trophy shelf, minus one

  • GLAAD Media Awards, January 2026 — Outstanding New TV Series.
  • Peabody Award, May 2026 — plus a TV Academy Honor.
  • Canadian Screen Awards, May 2026 — 16 wins from 18 nominations, a record, including Best Drama Series and Best Lead Performer for Hudson Williams.
  • TCA Awards, August 2026 — Program of the Year.
  • Primetime Emmys — nothing. It can enter the International Emmys instead.

Who else won at the TCAs

Apple TV's Widow's Bay took three: Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, Outstanding New Program, and Individual Achievement in Comedy for Kate O'Flynn. HBO Max's The Pitt won Outstanding Achievement in Drama, and Rhea Seehorn took Individual Achievement in Drama for Pluribus. TCA president Andy Dehnart summed up the slate:

"Creepy ghost stories, hot athlete romance and a global hive mind," he said in the association's 2026 announcement.

When does season 2 land?

Crave renewed the show in December 2025 and HBO Max is staying on as US distributor — same arrangement, same Emmy problem. Season 2 adapts The Long Game, shot in Canada over summer 2026, and is targeting spring 2027.

For the record: Connor Storrie couldn't win a Canadian Screen Award either. He's American, and a rule change restricted eligibility to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The show is too Canadian for one academy and its co-lead is too American for the other.
