One of the dragons is now having two masters.

Just like its predecessor Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon has never really shied away from altering George R.R. Martin’s story in a way that creators liked, though now it may backfire as the show is facing another potential major plot hole.

The brand new second season has been only 3 episodes in with 5 more to come in the following weeks, yet it was quick to confirm that another powerful family’s big issue doesn’t follow the same road as the original book for some reason.

It might not be a big problem for now, though the epic series will have no other choice but to handle it when the war between the Blacks and the Greens will finally start.

In House of the Dragon’s second season, it’s made pretty clear that Addam of Hull is Corlys Velaryon’s bastard, and not Laenor Velaryon’s like he was in the book.

Since Addam is now an illegitimate son of House Velaryon’s patriarch, in the show he appears to be significantly older than in George R.R. Martin’s novel, which makes him a much better fit for participating in the approaching war between House Targaryen’s divided family members.

Though House of the Dragon had nothing to say about it yet, the book fans already know that, despite being a bastard, Addam is still a dragon rider and thus is fully capable of claiming Seasmoke, but there’s a catch.

Seasmoke is initially Laenor Velaryon’s dragon, and the book’s Addam would have no trouble in becoming his master since Laenor is dead by the time the Blacks and the Greens’ conflict is intensified by young Prince Jaehaerys’s murder. But the show’s Laenor is still alive, though it’s a mystery for pretty much everyone in the series.

Still, Seasmoke’s bond with Laenor, even though the latter may have not ridden his dragon for a while, is still there, and this may become a major problem for Addam when it comes to his take in the upcoming war.

Considering that Laenor isn’t dead, his dragon is very likely to just refuse having someone else on his back while his master is somewhere away.

However weird it would sound, only the dragon himself may help House of the Dragon avoid yet another plot hole. Since Laenor was nowhere to be found for quite some time, it may come as a confirmation for Seasmoke himself that his master might be alive, but what’s clear is that he isn’t going to return.

Given that George R.R. Martin’s novels repeatedly proved that dragons weren’t just mindless creatures that could be easily manipulated, the show might take advantage of Seasmoke’s intelligence showing that he’s able to move on after his initial master’s disappearance and create a new bond with someone worthy like Addam.
