How Many Districts Are There in The Hunger Games, Explained

Suzanne Collins’ dystopian United States are split into several regions, with each of those having its own specialty and even dark secrets — here’s why a lost district has always been a big deal for Katniss Everdeen’s rebellion.
The Hunger Games ’ next prequel Sunrise on the Reaping will bring its audiences back to the dystopian Panem, seeing twice as many tributes being reaped for the 50th Hunger Games aka the second Quarter Quell.
The country’s districts have always had a mystery of its own, with one of them playing a key role in the biggest rebellion against Panem and President Snow led by the 74th Hunger Games’ winner Katniss Everdeen.
However, these districts aren’t just withered pieces of land with enough kids to send for the Capitol’s execution — they’re in fact Panem’s main economical power that basically holds the entire country from completely falling apart.
What Are the 13 Districts of Panem?
In The Hunger Games’ dystopian universe, districts are some sort of states in the country that took the US land after the apocalypse swept the world, with Panem originally consisting of 13 different regions.
Despite their inferior position compared to the country’s luxurious centre called the Capitol, it’s the districts that uphold Panem’s economy and actual existence, each of those having a specialty to bring to the Capitol.
To compare, District 1, Panem’s wealthiest region after the Capitol, is known for its fine jewellery and luxury items that would frequently decorate the Capitol’s interiors.
District 3 has another mission to stick to, producing televisions, computers and other electronic devices.
District 5 mostly produces batteries that power the whole Panem while District 8 boasts of good fabrics and clothing.
Lastly, District 10 is responsible for the livestock industry and District 12, where Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch are from, has coal mining as its priority.
District 13’s Secret Role in the Rebellion, Explained
The story of District 13 resurfaces when Katniss gets involved in a rebellion against the Capitol.
It was long believed that the region had been destroyed by the government, receiving some sort of punishment for a riot attempt, later known as the First Rebellion.
However, later it becomes clear that District 13 has intimidated the Capitol into letting it live as an independent nation due to the fact that the region had access to nuclear weapons.
Before the rebellion, District 13 was known for producing normal weapons for Panem, which actually helped its citizens confront the government.
During Katniss’ Second Rebellion, the region’s underground is used for arming up against President Snow.
