The Last of Us actress starred in one of many follow-ups to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classics, and it has been a pretty traumatic experience the rest of the crew (but not for Merced).

For many, Isabela Merced might be the best part of the latest The Last of Us season, but the actress’ fanbase has been pretty big for quite a long time before Dina’s role came along.

After rising to stardom thanks to the leading role in Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Merced could be seen in James Gunn’s latest Superman instalment and, what’s more important, in Alien: Romulus, a modern sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi hit Alien.

The movie is definitely one of the highlights in Merced’s career, though a pretty disturbing one.

Isabela Merced Says “Not One Person” From the Crew Could Watch Her Scene in ‘Alien: Romulus’

In Fede Álvarez’s movie, the actress stars in one of the leading roles as Kay Harrison whose pregnancy is an obvious obstacle on her team’s way to escape from extraterrestrial monsters.

This was what eventually traumatized the entire production team that couldn’t watch a scene with Merced’s character giving birth — which, however, was just as exciting for the actress herself.

“So I told him [Fede Álvarez] I wanted to see parts of it, and he showed it to me. I was the one holding the iPad, and there were ten people around me watching it on the iPad. So there’s a scene that I’m in, and they all had to turn away. Not one person stayed looking at that iPad because it was so disgusting”, Merced said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in 2024, several months before Alien: Romulus hit the screens worldwide.

What’s Next for ‘Alien’ Franchise After ‘Alien: Romulus’ Success?

Not that the movie would certainly become the last instalment in the franchise that has been kept just as popular as in the 1970s all along, but there might not be any major update on another Alien project anytime soon.

As Álvarez told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Alien: Romulus’ release in theatres last August, he is in no hurry for another film, but already has some ideas to start with.

“My philosophy is that you should never make [a sequel] in two years. You've got to get away. You've got to get the audience to really want it. If you think about Alien and Aliens, there's seven years between them. But we definitely have ideas about where it should go”, the director said.
