Jesse’s Backstory and Fate in The Last of Us Season 2 and Video Game, Explained

Young Mazino’s character made his debut in The Last of Us’ ongoing season 2 and is about to get a much bigger role now that the latest episode has introduced Dina’s plot twist. Here’s everything you need to know about Jesse and his role in both the video game and HBO series.
The Last of Us’ sophomore season has been going on for a while now, finding its characters from season 1 and some newcomers five years after the events of the first instalment.
Apart from Ellie’s friend and later love interest Dina portrayed by Isabela Merced, the show also introduced Young Mazino’s Jesse, Dina’s on-and-off boyfriend that will likely become an even bigger part of the entire history after the events of the second season’s episode 4.
However, it’s not only Dina’s pregnancy test results that suggest so — The Last of Us’ original video game has something else to say about the matter.
Who Is Jesse in The Last of Us?
In both the game and the TV series, Jesse is one of the survivors who resides in Jackson at the time Ellie and Joel arrive there.
There’s not so much to say about Jesse’s life before that, but it was believed that, alongside his parents, he’d found shelter in Jackson when Tommy Miller’s wife Maria was in charge, later becoming one of the members of the city council.
Not long after settling down in Jackson, Jesse started dating Dina, another survivor who had arrived in town before him. They continued their on-and-off relationship for years before eventually breaking up for good and remaining friends.
By the time The Last of Us’ season 2 picks the story up, Jesse has already become the leader of Jackson’s patrol groups and was known as a skilled fighter who would be allowed to go on patrol alone.
Jesse’s Expanded Role in The Last of Us Season 2, Explained (Spoiler Alert!)
Though he’s yet to join Ellie’s fight against Abby and her group in Seattle, Jesse first gets a bigger role without him even being present on the screen, as Dina admits to Ellie that she’s pregnant with Jesse’s child.
Ellie reacts by suggesting the three of them will now live together somewhere, though this is unlikely to happen anyway.
With the show not reaching this point yet, The Last of Us’ video game makes it clear that Jesse dies from Abby’s bullet shot right in his head when Ellie and her allies are ambushed by Abby and her group in a theatre in Seattle.
Soon afterwards, Dina returns to Seattle and gives birth to her and Jesse’s son called JJ, letting her former boyfriend’s parents be involved in their grandson’s life.
When Is The Last of Us Next Episode Being Released?
The show’s season 2 episode 5 will air on Max on May 11. The remaining two episodes will be released weekly on Sunday until May 25.
