Marshals season 2 premiere recap: 'All Hat No Cattle' kills someone off
The Yellowstone spinoff came back answering every cliffhanger at once — and closed the hour by driving one of its most sympathetic characters off a literal cliff.
Marshals does not believe in slow burns. The Season 2 premiere — "All Hat No Cattle," which aired Sunday on CBS after an NFL-delayed start — resolved the Tate kidnapping, exposed the conspiracy behind the East Camp land grab, stormed a villain's ranch, and still found time to kill Dolly Weaver. One recapper put it approvingly: the episode "does not waste half the season teasing answers."
The death is the part that stings. Dolly (Ellyn Jameson), who spent Season 1 building a real connection with Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton, dies when she and her father Tom Weaver drive off a cliff fleeing the collapse of his operation — and the finale's cruelest detail is that she never knew what her father was doing. Weaver survives the crash, which showrunner Spencer Hudnut told TheWrap was precisely the point:
Why is Joe Miñoso leaving Chicago Fire in season 15? Cruz's goodbye begins October 7

"Death would be a relief to him, but seeing his daughter pass away felt like the worst punishment."
Hudnut admits he originally assumed Dolly was complicit in her father's schemes; discovering she wasn't made the ending land harder:
"There's so many tragic elements to this episode, but there's the tragedy of she and Kayce actually starting to have a better understanding of one another."
The crossover that wasn't
Not everyone is applauding. SlashFilm called it the show's most disappointing episode yet, and the complaint has teeth:
- Season 1 ended with Tate taken to Texas — an apparent setup for a crossover with the other Yellowstone spinoff, where Rip and Beth now live.
- The premiere relocated the villain to a Wyoming ranch nobody had previously mentioned, reading like a late rewrite that canceled the family reunion.
- The show even winked at it — Kayce muses about finding "a guy who can raise an army," which describes exactly one mustachioed man in this universe — then dropped the thread entirely.
- There's a pattern here: Marshals killed Monica Dutton in its Season 1 premiere, making this two seasons running that open by disposing of a woman close to Kayce.
What's left is the season's actual spine: Tate is 18, traumatized, and wants in on the fight, and Hudnut promises his choices will "surprise a lot of people." Episode 2 airs Sunday on CBS.
