Network TV's most-watched survivalist is back on the road, and the only question fans actually care about — how much Ackles are we getting — has an answer with a number attached. Sort of.

Tracker opened its fourth season Sunday night with "Safe Harbor," in which Colter Shaw gets hired off a Reddit forum. That is not a joke: a resourceful teenager recruits him through a missing-persons subreddit to find her father, and the trail leads into a criminal operation at the Port of Los Angeles. Justin Hartley promised the episode carries "a really good twist" that serves the story rather than shock — the kind of thing you say when your show was the #2 most-watched series on television last season and can afford patience.

But let's get to the actual headline. Fans treat every Tracker season as a countdown to Jensen Ackles, and Hartley gave TV Insider the arithmetic directly:

"He's in at least one [episode], and we'll have him back when we can. I think probably in the new year, we'll have him back for a few."

Decoded: Russell Shaw returns in episode 5, with a bigger block of appearances penciled in for early 2027 — the structure the show has used for Ackles since his Supernatural schedule stopped being CBS's problem.

What drags Russell back

  • Blackmail, for starters. Glenn Morshower's McIntyre is squeezing Russell into a job — fallout from the secret deal Russell cut in the Season 3 finale.
  • A friend who doesn't want to be found. The brothers' case centers on someone from Russell's orbit who is, in Hartley's phrasing, more than fine staying lost — "a really dire situation."
  • An actual united front. After seasons of sibling friction over their father's death, the dynamic has shifted.

On that last point, Hartley is uncharacteristically direct about where the brothers stand now:

"It reunites the brothers, and they have a united front."

The rest of the call sheet

Sofia Pernas — Hartley's actual wife — returns as Billie, William deVry turns up in episode 5 alongside Ackles, and Cassady McClincy Zhang joins as new series regular Mel, a character showrunner Elwood Reid has already hinted connects to Russell's world. Episode 2 airs Sunday on CBS, streaming next day on Paramount+; the Ackles watch officially ends at episode 5.
