Matlock Got You Hooked? Here Are 5 Shows to Watch Next
Now that the first season is coming to an end, it's time to find something else to binge.
Legal drama is a genre you can't be indifferent to. You either love it or hate it. And I don't know how it happened, but it turned out that I'm actually a huge fan of the genre. It just gives me a kind of satisfaction to see these superhero-like people dealing with problems that are usually a lot worse than my everyday shenanigans.
One of the recent shows that has caught my attention is Matlock. It's a legal drama that has so much more to offer than just a case-solving scenario. The title role of Madeline Kingston aka Matty Matlock is played by the always amazing Kathy Bates. She makes her way into a huge law firm to seek justice for her late daughter.
Season 1 of the show is coming to an end soon, so if you feel like you're going to miss it, here are 5 other shows with a similar premise to check out.
1. Harry's Law (2011)
Long before Matlock, Kathy Bates showed the world she was perfect for any tough-as-nails lawyer role in a show called Harry's Law. In the NBC series, she plays Harriet Korn, a recently fired patent attorney.
The show follows her on her new journey after she and her newfound partners start their own unique law firm in a rundown shoe store in Cincinnati. Harry's Law is a legal drama that doubles as a brilliant comedy.
2. Elsbeth ( 2024)
If you are looking for a show with the same quirky vibe, but also with an important message to the world, then check out Elsbeth. The show follows its main character, Elsbeth Tascioni, as she moves from Chicago to New York to become part of the NYPD team.
Like Matlock, viewers soon find out there's more to her story than just a desire to annoy people with her know-it-all attitude. The show grabs you from the first minute, presenting creative storylines and bringing in beloved actors to guest star in each episode.
3. Suits ( 2011)
To tell you the truth, this was the first legal drama I ever watched, and it even made me want to be a lawyer... but I gave up on that idea when I realized there was no way I was going to become one like Harvey Specter, the show's title character.
Suits tells the story of a corporate law firm and the struggles they face on a daily basis. In the first episode of the series, Harvey hires a con man, a brilliant young man named Mike Ross, who knows the law better than anyone, but never went to law school. From the moment Harvey hires Mike, he is in for endless trouble.
4. Boston Legal (2004)
Boston Legal is a sharp, witty legal drama that perfectly blends courtroom drama with humor. James Spader and William Shatne play the main characters, two eccentric lawyers Alan Shore and Denny Crane. Together they take on some of the most complex civil and criminal cases.
While Matlock is rooted in straightforward justice and moral clarity, Boston Legal balances legal battles with deeper ethical questions, offering a more dynamic and in many ways modern take on the legal drama genre.
5. The Good Fight (2017)
The Good Fight is a smart, politically charged legal drama that tackles issues like corruption, fake news, and the never-ending problems of the existing justice system. And all of that – through the perspective of its strong female protagonist, Diane Lockhart, played magnificently by Christine Baranski.
The series blends sharp legal cases with bold social commentary, offering a more nuanced, contemporary, and often provocative look at the modern legal and political landscape.
