Mike Flanagan Explains Why ‘The Dark Tower’ Show Is Taking So Long: “It’s Like Building an Oil Tanker”

A TV adaptation for King’s epic book series is far from being one of Mike Flanagan’s upcoming releases, but his recent update might be even better news than a premiere date announcement. Here’s what Flanagan had to say about his progress on The Dark Tower.
It’s almost time for Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck to arrive in theatres across the world and mark yet another successful collaboration with Stephen King, but there’s at least one more King-related project that many might be even more excited about.
The director has been long rumored to silently work on a TV show based on King’s “The Dark Tower”, a dark fantasy book series that never saw a good adaptation so far (we don’t count the 2017 movie of the same name that even Stephen King didn’t really consider an adaptation).
There weren’t many updates on the matter though, but Mike Flanagan has just reflected on how things are really going for “The Dark Tower”’s adaptation.
Even though the show is clearly not coming anytime soon, the director’s revelations might actually help King’s fans sleep better now.
Mike Flanagan Says ‘The Dark Tower’ Series Is “Constantly in the Works”
To Mike Flanagan’s fans, it might not be a secret that the director has quite a busy schedule, though he has recently made things clear about his intention to helm The Dark Tower no matter what.
“It’s not that I’ve put it down. It’s just that the thing is so big, it’s like building an oil tanker. We’ve been moving it forward this whole time. It’s just, that’s how big it is. It’s constantly in the works, and you better believe as often as you guys may want to ask about it, Stephen King is asking me about it more, and I’m not gonna let him down”, Flanagan revealed in a new interview with ComicBook recently.
Stephen King’s Fans Aren’t That Happy About Mike Flanagan’s “The Dark Tower” Plans
It might be that Flanagan has been dealing with “The Dark Tower” for way too long to still remain in the pre-production process, but some feel like the director is betraying Stephen King’s trust by letting other big projects distract him on the way.
“I was ecstatic when I read he was confirmed as the show runner. Trying not to get my hopes up, I came to terms with not expecting perfection and coinciding with Flannagnas other work I was optimistically cautious. The more time has passed the more dismayed I feel. Nowhe has plans to work on another Exorcist reboot? Dude needs to slow down. Probably already trying to tie himself down with another project after his adventures with the tower, after his Exorcist movie and after another King project he wants to adapt. The Dark Tower , however he wants to do it, episodes or movies/parts, needs to be taken more seriously”, Redditor paperthintrash ranted in a thread.
“I have a feeling Flanagan knows full well when The Dark Tower can truly start chugging and signing up for The Exorcist is much like the above mentioned Chuck thing, I think he knew he had time to work on one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time and we Tower Junkies just need to calm down and quit assuming his Tower project would be filming tomorrow if not for The Exorcist”, IAlwaysSayBoo-urns retorted.
