There should always be a line.

Summary:

  • Friends is probably the most popular sitcom ever created.
  • The show is full of different types of comedy, and absurd comedy is the one that prevails.
  • The "hand twin" storyline was too much even for a comedic show.

Who doesn't love Friends? Probably only those who've never seen it, but even in that case, we think there are many exceptions, because so many storylines have gone viral on the Internet that if you tell a person "we were on a break" or use an Italian curse phrase, they'll probably understand what's going on.

Friends has six main characters, and each of them has their own key personality traits. For example, Monica is obsessed with food and cooking, Rachel is a fashion icon, Ross is the "professor" of the group, Phoebe is "the weird one," Chandler is the guy who always jokes around, and that leaves us with Joey as the dumb one.

Now, it's not that we're cruel or anything, but the show actually made it absolutely clear that Joey is this goofy, handsome guy who doesn't need to be intelligent to be loved. However, there were many times when the writers made it too difficult to root for him and not be annoyed by his behavior.

For example, the episode that fans hate the most is the one where Joey speaks French. Personally, we think it's pretty adorable, but the general consensus is that it was just plain stupid, even for Joey.

But we have another episode that just proves that there should always be a limit, and season 5 episode 24 crosses all the lines with absurd comedy.

It's the last episode of the season, called The One in Vegas: Part 2, and features Joey's obsession with a casino dealer who he claims is his identical hand twin. Joey harasses the man and sings songs about their hands, and also makes several schemes about how they could make a fortune by revealing their hands to the world.

The storyline is very cringey, but there’s one thing that makes it a little bit tolerable.

“It was absurd but Thomas Lennon was absolute perfection. Thomas’ delivery of “I will cut my hand off and give it to you” was perfection. I’ll watch that episode just to see how he plays off Joey’s ridiculousness,” Redditor maybeCheri said.

Well, maybe one day we too will find it in our hearts to love the scene for Thomas Lennon, but right now it seems like mission impossible.
