From the most absurd scenarios, like the entire surgical team accidentally getting high on the pot cookies, to the ones that made meme history as the beginning of "pick me girl" culture, there were so many funny, emotional, heartbreaking, and memorable scenes in the show that it's hard to pick and choose favorites.

The elevator scenes are inherently great because they can be either quick and to the point or long and torturous. If the elevator is working well, the characters have about a couple of minutes to say or do something, and no matter what the mood of the scene is, the speed of the scene usually hits the audience right in the feels.

One of the funniest moments that didn't even need words was the unfortunate elevator ride Derek took with Meredith, Addison and Rose, with a perfect punchline from Mark as the cherry on top. It was quick, but had multiple layers that added to the fun with each stop the elevator made. And that's what made the scene so good.

When the elevator is broken or stopped, the audience can feel the tension of the characters. A very small space between the floors always paints a perfect metaphor for the way the audience perceives the scene.

Alex Karev and George O'Malley's elevator surgery had to be one of the most nerve-wracking scenes on the show, just because the audience could feel how high the stakes were. They had to act fast, but they were also stuck and had to be walked through the doors during the surgery.

In addition, the elevator was often used as a way to say hello and goodbye to various characters who appeared, reappeared, or even left the show. If elevators had eyes, they would be the best source of gossip in any establishment, and Grey's Anatomy has done a wonderful job of portraying that.
