Scenes from a Marriage destroyed two relationships – one on-screen and one off-screen.

In 2021, Hagai Levi’s Scenes from a Marriage made all the headlines, and the two leads were suddenly in the spotlight, too. Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, who played Mira and Jonathan, the couple whose marriage was crumbling, had amazing chemistry both in the drama series and on the red carpet, promoting their project.

The show, which is a remake of Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 miniseries of the same name, is essentially a heart-breaking take on love and marriage, and it has reportedly taken a toll on Chastain’s friendship with her co-star.

Speaking to Vanity Fair earlier this month, the actress admitted that filming Scenes from a Marriage was “very tough” in general, but especially considering the negative impact it’d had on her off-screen relationship with Isaac.

The star remarked that she still loved her longtime friend and believed that they were going to pull through at the end of the day. Still, she felt like she needed “a breather” because of the love-hate relationship her and Isaac’s characters had on the show.

Despite the fact that Scenes from a Marriage wasn’t an easy experience, Chastain acknowledged that she would never do anything else for a living, saying, “But there’s so much joy in what I get to do.”

The Oscar-winning actress thought that her job, which she called simply “the best in the world,” entailed a lot of cathartic experiences. She added that she got the best of both worlds – she could act out the really heavy stuff on set and still come back home to her quiet and peaceful life.

Both Chastain and Isaac’s performances in Scenes from a Marriage were praised by critics and audiences alike, even earning the actors a few nominations for prestigious awards.

Hopefully, they can both recover from working on such a draining series, and their friendship lives to see another day (or even project).

Scenes from a Marriage is now available for streaming on Max.
